Recent reports suggest that development on Fallout 5 is indeed progressing, but intriguingly, it may be helmed by a different team due to Bethesda’s current commitments to other major franchise projects.
Since the release of Fallout 76 in 2018, fans have eagerly awaited a new installment in the beloved post-apocalyptic series. Previous statements from Todd Howard indicated that no development would commence until work on The Elder Scrolls 6 was completed. However, a recent leak has hinted that Fallout 5 may be advancing sooner than expected, albeit under the direction of a new development team.
Insights from Industry Insiders
During a recent episode of the Xbox Two Podcast, industry insider and Windows Central Executive Editor Jez Corden disclosed that Fallout 5 has received the green light for development. Significantly, this decision appears to have led to the cancellation of an MMO project being developed by ZeniMax Online, creators of The Elder Scrolls Online. Corden noted that the substantial financial investment required for an MMO, which needs ongoing support and updates, ultimately swayed the decision towards the more commercially viable Fallout 5.
He elaborated, stating,
“From what I heard, it was a case of ‘Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?’”
With Bethesda Game Studios currently focused on developing content for Starfield and ramping up for The Elder Scrolls 6, Corden speculated that a new studio might be established to take on Fallout 5. He said,
“The core teams of Bethesda right now, they’re working on Starfield DLC, and also Elder Scrolls 6 is full steam ahead. Obviously that’s a very important game for Microsoft as well.”
While news of Fallout 5‘s development may excite fans, it’s important to remember that even if work is indeed starting now, it could still be several years before an official announcement or gameplay is revealed. Thus, although gamers may not see a new edition in time for the upcoming season of the TV show, the possibility of reentering the iconic vaults lies on the horizon.
