A Chinese fan of Jang Wonyoung, a member of the popular group IVE, is receiving backlash for causing the idol to utter something offensive in a different language.
On May 14, 2024, a Chinese fan of Jang Wonyoung from the girl group IVE shared a screen recording of her fan call on Threads.
In the video, she requests Jang Wonyoung to teach her a phrase in Chinese. Jang Wonyoung accepts the request and repeats the phrase for the fan.
After finishing, Jang Wonyoung inquires about the meaning of the phrase from the fan. She proceeds to inform the IVE member that it translates to “Wonyoung is the most gorgeous and stunning girl in the world.”
However, this was not the message that she had Jang Wonyoung convey. Instead, she had Jang Wonyoung say, “Starship Entertainment, if you are willing to work, then work. But if not, then leave.”This phrase is commonly used in China and is perceived as impolite.
The fan who wrote the subtitles for the video expressed their anxiety about asking Jang Wonyoung to say the phrase, and even suspected that the idol may have seen through their deception. Despite these concerns, Jang Wonyoung did not confront the fan and instead showed gratitude for their request.
At the conclusion of the video, she mentioned, “Despite lying to Queen Wonyoung, I still received a Chinese ‘thank you’.”
Despite the fan’s lack of awareness, other Chinese supporters swiftly flocked to the comment section to condemn her actions. They pointed out that Jang Wonyoung seemed to be aware of the negative connotation of the phrase and her forced smile gave off an overall sense of unhappiness. Witnessing her display such emotions caused immense sadness among fans.
Some questioned the reason for asking Jang Wonyoung to say those things and urged fans to ask their idols normal questions. Others suggested that idols should have interpreters with them to avoid being taken advantage of in the future.
It was clear that numerous Chinese netizens were feeling embarrassed by the situation and appealed to the fan to cease their behavior, as it was bringing shame upon Chinese fans.
