Microsoft’s Chief Executive Officer, Satya Nadella, has responded to concerns surrounding the future of Xbox amid recent leadership changes that have led to speculation about the brand’s viability. Rumors have circulated that these transitions may indicate a gradual decline, or “sunsetting, ”of the Xbox gaming division.

In late February, Phil Spencer, who has been a prominent figure in the Xbox brand for years, announced his retirement. He was not alone in this decision—Sarah Bond, who held the position of Xbox President, also stepped down. The departure of such key leaders raised alarm bells among fans and industry observers.

Further fueling these concerns, Seamus Blackley, one of the original creators of Xbox, implied in a recent statement that the brand was facing its twilight, jokingly comparing its situation to being under the care of a palliative physician.

“Xbox, like a lot of businesses that aren’t the core AI business, is being sunsetted. They don’t say that, but that’s what’s happening, ” Blackley told Gamesbeat.“I expect that the new CEO, Asha Shar, her job is going to be as a palliative care doctor who slides Xbox gently into the night.”

Nadella’s Reassurance: Gaming is Here to Stay

Responding to these rumors, Nadella emphasized that gaming remains one of Microsoft’s fundamental aspects. He reassured staff that the company is committed to its gaming division moving forward.

“There are core identities in this company. I don’t think Microsoft will exist without these identities continuing to thrive. We’re a platform company, a developer company, ” Nadella stated, as reported by WindowsCentral.

“Being a knowledge worker company, and gaming. These are the main identities of what Microsoft has always meant, and will always mean. For me, we’re long on gaming. We’ll continue to invest, and we’ll always do so.”

Additionally, Asha Shar, Xbox’s newly appointed CEO, reiterated the importance of the console experience, stating, “Xbox starts with console.” This statement comes on the heels of her announcement regarding the upcoming next-gen console, ‘Project Helix, ’ promising exceptional performance and compatibility with both Xbox and PC games.

Before her departure, Bond noted that the new console is designed to offer a premium, high-end, curated gaming experience.
