In a recent announcement, Masaaki Hoshino, the producer of the upcoming game Pokemon Champions, confirmed that the title will not feature the complete Pokedex upon its launch. Instead, players can expect a curated selection of Pokemon that may rotate seasonally to ensure a fair and balanced competitive environment.
Hoshino pointed out that releasing over 1, 000 Pokemon at once could complicate gameplay significantly. However, the exact reasons behind this decision—whether related to technical challenges or gameplay balance—were not clearly articulated.
Seasonal Gameplay Structure
In shaping the future of Pokemon Champions, Hoshino mentioned the introduction of a seasonal structure that would regulate which Pokemon are available.“With the release of Pokemon Champions, we’re going to start out with a specific selection of Pokemon that will be available, ” he explained. This will create an evolving set of regulations that categorize Pokemon access based on seasonal changes.
The timing of these seasonal updates and the total number of additional Pokemon introduced in each season remain unspecified. Hoshino suggested that offering the entire Pokedex simultaneously might lead to significant balance difficulties, emphasizing the need for a measured approach.
“At some point down the line, there may be many thousands of Pokemon, ” Hoshino noted, highlighting the challenge of managing such a vast array of creatures in a single competitive environment.“So we could maybe select them depending on the season.”

It’s important to note that the version of the game showcased during the event is still under development. Hoshino confirmed that final details regarding the roster size and seasonal regulations have yet to be determined.
Additionally, he assured fans that Pokemon Champions is meant to be a long-term gaming platform that will continue to evolve and extend its gameplay for years to come. Future updates may include new Pokemon and features from mainline titles, keeping the game aligned with the overall Pokemon series, albeit not always synchronously.
At launch, only Mega Evolution will serve as the battle gimmick, although other mechanics like Terastallization and Z-Moves could potentially be introduced later.
