Splitgate 2 is set to relaunch in December, a significant move coming five months after the developers decided to roll back its initial release. This decision followed considerable controversy and a notable decline in player engagement.
The original version of Splitgate captivated gamers with its unique blend of first-person shooter (FPS) mechanics reminiscent of Halo, infused with elements from the Portal series. At its peak, the game boasted nearly 70, 000 concurrent players on PC alone, establishing a solid fan base in a competitive market.
In an effort to build upon this success, 1047 Games embarked on creating a comprehensive sequel, which aimed to introduce a Battle Royale mode. However, the launch on June 6, 2025, did not meet expectations, attracting just over 25, 000 concurrent players on Steam. In the weeks that followed, the game witnessed a staggering drop, losing over 80% of its player base.
The game’s troubled debut was compounded by various controversies, including the polarizing ‘Make FPS Great Again’ hat showcased at Summer Game Fest and backlash over a $140 USD cosmetic bundle in the store. Within a month, the developers opted to revert the game back to Beta status, and are now preparing for its subsequent relaunch.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Splitgate 2 Beta! On December 4th, the Beta Season & active Battle Passes will be ending, alongside your seasonal “rank” progress. We will also be taking the Beta servers offline on the 4th to prepare for relaunch later in December.…

Upcoming Relaunch: A Reset for Splitgate 2
On July 23, the development team candidly acknowledged that they had “launched too early, ”admitting that Splitgate 2 was not ready for its initial debut. Following the rollback to Beta status, some staff members were laid off, while the remaining team dedicated themselves to fundamentally reworking key aspects of the game, including progression systems, map design, and monetization strategies.
After four months of intensive development, the studio anticipates a relaunch date earlier than the originally projected early 2026 timeline. On December 4, servers will be taken down to facilitate preparations for the complete relaunch later in the month. During this downtime, developers assert they have “rebuilt the entire foundation around what makes Splitgate special, ” refining areas such as “portals, movement, and core gunplay.”
For the coming launch, 1047 Games is adopting a more measured approach regarding expectations. According to CEO Ian Proulx, the goal is to “put out a great game and then grow it over time, ” emphasizing a desire to avoid creating excessive hype. He humorously noted that he will not attend this year’s Game Awards.
