In a recent discussion, the developers of Peak shared insights into their unique pricing strategy. The popular co-op mountain-climbing game was initially launched in June 2025 with a promotional price of $5 before settling at a standard price point of $8. This deliberate choice is not arbitrary but rests on a foundation of psychological principles and developer intuition, as co-creator Nick Kaman explained.
Understanding the Pricing Psychology Behind Peak
In an interview with Game File, Kaman introduced a light-hearted yet insightful theory regarding consumer price perception.“We often joked about the actual value of a game. How do players interpret spending five dollars? To them, it’s just five bucks. But when it comes to six dollars, it also feels like five bucks, ” he elaborated.
Kaman proposed a conceptual framework featuring various psychological thresholds in pricing. For example, he explained that prices set at $4, $6, and even $8 can evoke similar responses to a $5 price tag. However, once the price climbs to $10, it transforms into a psychologically significant barrier for many consumers.

He further illustrated his points with examples, saying, “These tiers are interesting: you see that twelve bucks feels like ten bucks, but once you reach thirteen bucks, it starts to feel like fifteen bucks. We discovered that eight bucks resonates as five bucks without crossing into ten bucks territory. Even $7.99 feels like five bucks, right?”
The primary objective of Kaman and his team was to determine the ideal price that minimizes perceived risk for players, while still ensuring sufficient revenue to fund ongoing game updates and future projects. He noted, “We found that eight bucks compared to five bucks represented the most favorable pricing differential we could achieve; thus, it became our optimal price point.”
This well-thought-out pricing strategy has proven effective, as Peak has emerged as one of 2025’s standout indie successes, selling millions of copies and cultivating a vibrant community engaged in its whimsical co-op adventures.
