YG Entertainment, whose contract with BIGBANG G-Dragon has expired, has extended the trademark registration of “G-DRAGON”.
According to an exclusive report by South Korea’s Sports Kyungdan News, YG Entertainment submitted a trademark renewal application involving the “G-Dragon”trademark in September. The “G-Dragon”trademark was first applied for in February 2003, with a validity period of 10 years. YG Entertainment registered a renewal period in February 2013 and extended the validity period again. Later, before the validity period expired, in September 2023 It will be renewed again on March 13. Unless special circumstances occur, the re-registration of the “G-DRAGON”trademark will be extended for ten years.
YG Entertainment’s move is notable because their exclusive contract with G-Dragon expired as early as June this year. The actual contract expiration date is December 29, 2022, and none of the G-Dragon personal activities announced during the period have been fulfilled.
According to the patent lawyer, “The extension of registration seems to be going smoothly, but if G-Dragon files an objection application and claims that the “trademark right”belongs to him, the ownership may change. On the other hand, if he agrees to YG Entertainment’s renewal, it will also go smoothly.
