Gambit set to return in MCU’s X-Men movie, but there’s a catch

The X-Men could be getting a big surprise with the addition of Gambit, a character often associated with Deadpool and Wolverine. However, there is a possibility that Channing Tatum may not be a part of the movie.

Despite Gambit being one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, it seems that the role will be recast for his introduction into the MCU. This is likely due to the reported reboot of the franchise, which will also see the long-awaited Deadpool and Wolverine cameo.

According to insider Scooper DanielRPK, the MCU’s X-Men reboot will center around Gambit and Kitty Pryde. As this will be the franchise’s own interpretation of the X-Men, it is highly likely that the roles will be recast.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit is Deadpool & Wolverine’s breakout character, but he’ll likely be recast for the MCU’s X-Men.

The appearance of Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine has rapidly gained popularity among fans. Tatum’s portrayal has received praise for its authenticity, from his faithful costume to his accurate Cajun accent.

Despite Gambit and the rest of The Others surviving the events of Deadpool & Wolverine, it is likely that the role will still be recast after Secret Wars. This follows Marvel’s established pattern of fan-pleasing casting for one-off cameos, with John Krasinski’s portrayal of Reed Richards setting a precedent for Pedro Pascal’s appearance.

If the role is recast, it would become the third live-action portrayal of Gambit. Channing Tatum was initially set to play the character in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but due to conflicts in his schedule, the role was ultimately given to Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights.

Despite years having passed, Tatum ultimately returned to the role and was set to star in a solo film as well as multiple X-Men films. Unfortunately, the project was still stuck in development and faced obstacles due to the decline of the X-Men franchise in terms of both critical reception and box office success. Eventually, the film was scrapped altogether after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Elliot Page has portrayed Kitty Pryde in two live-action adaptations, 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, making a recasting of the character her fourth on-screen portrayal. Prior to Page, the role was played by Sumela Kay and Katie Stuart in X-Men and X2, respectively.
