On November 7, 2024, fans of the popular manga series Gantz received exciting news from its creator, Hiroya Oku. During an announcement published in the 23rd issue of Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior magazine for the year, Oku revealed his plans to begin production on a new manga project. While the initiative is still in its early stages, this marks a significant development for his followers eagerly awaiting fresh content.
Hiroya Oku Prepares to Launch His First Original Work in Over Three Years
Hiroya Oku expressed his enthusiasm for this forthcoming project, stating that while the story remains largely conceptual, he is eager to bring it to life through his artistry. He emphasized his commitment to crafting an engaging narrative that retains the attention of his audience. However, specifics regarding the themes and storyline of his new manga have yet to be disclosed.
As mentioned in the announcement, there is no official information regarding the serialization platform for Oku’s new work. Given its mention in Big Comic Superior, many fans anticipate that it will be published within this magazine, although this remains unconfirmed. At this time, it is uncertain when more detailed information will become available.
Fans of Oku can expect his trademark elements to feature prominently in this new manga. His works often showcase mature themes, including intense violence and provocative content, varying in intensity based on the individual project. Additionally, the incorporation of expansive set pieces and technological themes continues to be a hallmark of Oku’s storytelling style.
One of Oku’s most recognized works, Gantz, exemplifies these thematic choices. Originally serialized from 2000 to 2013 in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump, the manga catered to a seinen audience (adult males aged 18 to 40) and has since become a significant influence in the manga community. It also inspired a successful anime adaptation produced by Studio Gonzo, which aired a 26-episode season from April to November 2004.
Gantz has sparked two live-action films and additional spin-off manga series. Notably, the historical spin-off, GANTZ:E, illustrated by Jin Kagetsu, launched in January 2020 and continued its run in Weekly Young Jump until its transition to the YanJan! Manga app in January 2024, where it is currently ongoing. Moreover, Shueisha introduced a vertical, full-color rendition of the original series on their “Jump TOON” platform in July 2024, further expanding its reach.
In addition to Gantz, Oku is renowned for his acclaimed series Inuyashiki, which ran from January 2014 to July 2017 in Kodansha’s Evening magazine. The series was adapted into an anime produced by MAPPA Studios and aired from October to December 2017, encompassing a total of 11 gripping episodes.
As fans await the dawn of Oku’s new project, there is great anticipation about the potential directions it might take and how it will reflect the artist’s evolved perspective since his last original series.
