Calvin Ford, the coach of Gervonta Davis, has expressed genuine concerns regarding the safety of his fighter ahead of the upcoming bout against Jake Paul, describing it as a “risky fight” for the reigning world champion.
Following his defeat to Tommy Fury in early 2023, Jake Paul has been striving to bolster his boxing credentials by competing against established fighters. His recent victories over opponents such as Ryan Bourland, Andre August, Mike Tyson, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.have stirred debates, particularly over their respective primes.
Despite criticisms surrounding these matchups, Paul remains undeterred, targeting prominent names within the boxing community. His announcement on August 20 that he will face Gervonta “Tank” Davis sent shockwaves through the boxing world. This exhibition match is set for November 14, although concerns linger within Davis’s camp regarding Tank’s safety.
Concerns Raised Over Safety in Upcoming Exhibition Match
During a recent interview with Fight Hype, Ford acknowledged the inherent risks associated with this bout. He stated, “I’ve got a serious fight coming up. Jake Paul and Tank have been at it for years, and naturally, I need to worry about his safety.”
Ford continued, “Jake is proficient at what he does and has honed his skills effectively. That success is evident in his current standing in the boxing world. I’ll be forthright; this fight poses significant risks. There are numerous factors in play—like the gloves and the weight class—that I’m still navigating. My primary focus is ensuring Tank’s safety throughout this ordeal.”

The match is notably categorized as an exhibition, implying no official winner will be declared. However, Ford highlighted another concern regarding weight divisions; Jake typically competes at approximately 200 pounds, whereas Davis fights at 130 pounds. A catchweight limitation is likely, but, as Ford indicated, the details remain to be finalized.
