On May 28, 2025, Discord announced its beta-testing of a new digital currency dubbed ‘Discord Orbs.’

Users can obtain Orbs by completing designated ‘Quests, ’ which involve watching promotional videos, shows, or participating in specific games sponsored by advertisers. These Quests may appear as pop-up notifications on your screen.

In the past, completing Quests rewarded users with themed content related to the game or show they were engaging with, such as character-specific profile pictures in games like Marvel Rivals. Now, users have the flexibility to spend their Orbs at their discretion, although advertisers may still offer unique content linked to their properties.

Through completing Quests, Discord users can accumulate Orbs, which are redeemable in the Discord Shop for exclusive items such as Nitro passes, profile badges, and more.

These Orbs can be utilized in Discord’s Shop to purchase exclusive content, including Nitro Credits, profile badges, special Avatar Decorations, and distinctive Profile Effects without the need for credit card information or other payment details.

However, it is important to note that Orbs cannot be used to acquire Partner-branded shop items, gifts, or recurring subscriptions for Nitro or Boosting.

Currently, Discord is rolling out Orbs to a limited number of users globally, with plans to expand the feature shortly. Users selected for this trial will receive a notification when they log into the app, providing them with insights into the new Orb system.

This significant update follows the appointment of former Activision Blizzard Vice Chairman Humam Sakhnini as CEO, taking over from co-founder Jason Citron, who stepped down earlier this year.

In addition to the new Orb currency, Discord is also testing another innovative feature that utilizes facial scanning technology to verify users’ ages, which is currently available only in Australia and the UK.
