GMMTV, a prominent Thai entertainment powerhouse celebrated for its engaging BL and GL narratives, is facing significant criticism following the release of the trailer for the anticipated 2026 GL drama, Her The Series.

This series features notable talents such as “Namtan” Tipnaree Weerawatnodom, “Film” Rachanun Mahapreukpong, and “Junior” Panachai Sriariyarungruang, all of whom previously garnered acclaim for their roles in the hit show Pluto.

However, enthusiasm quickly morphed into outrage following the revelation of a controversial plot twist central to the drama.

Unpacking the Controversial Storyline

In Her The Series, characters portrayed by Junior and Namtan both inhabit the role of Arpo, a character initially depicted as biologically male. The plot takes a dark turn when Arpo learns of his fiancée’s betrayal and, after experiencing a traumatic assault, stages his own death. He subsequently returns as a woman bent on revenge.

The trailer further depicts Arpo utilizing vaginal dilators, commonly associated with gender-affirming procedures. This portrayal has led many viewers to interpret the narrative’s use of gender transition as a gimmick for revenge, rather than a sincere exploration of identity.

During interviews, Namtan confirmed her role as Arpo “after their transition, ” reinforcing audience concerns about the storyline’s handling of sensitive themes.

Motives Behind the Backlash

Backlash from netizens and LGBTQ+ advocates centers around several key issues:

  • The series is categorized as GL, yet features a character initially played by a male actor during the pre-transition stage.
  • A cisgender actress is in the role of a trans woman, despite GMMTV’s roster including transgender talent.
  • Gender-affirming surgery is depicted as a tool for revenge, reducing it to a trivial matter rather than an essential aspect of personal identity for many transgender individuals.

Many online commentators voiced concerns regarding the potential harm this depiction could cause, particularly the insinuation that transitioning is a means to an end, rather than a genuine personal journey.

Viewers have expressed dissatisfaction over GMMTV’s choice of such a narrative in an era that demands more authentic representation. Calls for the cancellation of the series have surged across social media platforms, forums, and within global LGBTQ+ communities.

Critics argue that the narrative perpetuates misconceptions about transgender experiences, risking the reinforcement of damaging stereotypes. With the increasing visibility of transgender performers in the Thai entertainment industry, many see GMMTV’s decision as a missed opportunity for authentic representation and nuanced storytelling.

As it stands, GMMTV has yet to release an official response addressing the unfolding controversy.
