Google has replaced Chromecast with the Google TV Streamer and discontinued the former. The cost for the new set-top box is $99, but it provides a similar value to Apple TV.
Although Chromecast was a convenient device that allowed users to plug it into their TV and cast content from their phone, Google has decided to discontinue its production due to the increasing intelligence of TVs and their ability to perform this function independently.
The Google TV Streamer, which is twice as expensive, has taken the place of Chromecast. It is a 4K set-top box that can be found on the Google TV Streamer website.
The latest set-top box has a unique pill-shaped appearance and can be purchased in Porcelain, while an exclusive Hazel model is being sold on the US Google Store. The device includes HDMI 2.1, Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbps), and USB-C ports, with the USB port designated for power usage.
The chip powering the Google TV Streamer has a 22% faster CPU, while the RAM has been upgraded to 4 GB (twice the amount in the 2020 model) and storage has been increased by 4 times to 32 GB.
Despite not being able to match the capabilities of the Nvidia Shield TV and Apple TV 4K, the improvement achieved is significant. Furthermore, it is compatible with Spatial Audio when used with Pixel Buds Pro.
The device supports various video formats such as Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG, as well as audio formats including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos. It is equipped with Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4 GHz / 5 GHz) for connectivity.
Additionally, the device serves as a smart home hub, in line with Google’s goal to revitalize the Nest line. This will allow for easier control over Google Home and Matter-compatible devices.
Think of it as a Nest Display or Pixel Tablet with a larger screen. This additional feature requires the inclusion of another radio, thus resulting in a bigger overall design.
The Google TV Streamer will be released for purchase on September 24 in the US, but its availability in other regions remains uncertain.
