Despite previous challenges, Google remains committed to virtual reality and mixed reality technology, as evidenced by their recent partnership with XR experts Magic Leap.
Google Cardboard was the first introduction to virtual reality (VR) for numerous individuals. In addition, the corporation made significant investments in augmented reality technology and even incorporated it into their Pixel smartphone series through ARCore.
The announcement of a new partnership with Magic Leap demonstrates that Google remains invested in immersive technology.
It is not disclosed what specific terms and conditions were involved in the formation of a ‘multi-faceted strategic technology partnership’ between Google and Magic Leap. However, the press release highlights Magic Leap’s specialized knowledge in optics.
According to Upload VR’s report, Magic Leap has conducted research and obtained patents for various optical techniques. These advancements could prove valuable for their future ventures in immersive technology, including XR and VR.
According to earlier reports from February 2023, Google and Samsung are collaborating on a new XR headset called Project Moohan. The project is rumored to incorporate Samsung hardware, while also featuring Google branding and Android XR software. However, it was later reported in November 2023 that the project had been reevaluated to align with the specifications of the Apple Vision Pro.
Until a statement is released by Google, Samsung, or Magic Leap, it is still speculation that Google entered into this partnership to incorporate Magic Leap’s optical technology into Project Moohan.
