Obbe Vermeij, a former developer associated with the Grand Theft Auto series, has shared insights regarding Rockstar Games’ approach to impending age verification regulations that may impact the highly anticipated release of GTA 6.
Age restrictions for video games, similar to those applied to films and television, have existed for years, preventing sales to underage individuals or those lacking parental consent. However, the implementation of age verification measures is gaining traction online, particularly in the United Kingdom, where the government is instituting mandatory checks for accessing adult content.
This trend towards age verification has begun to infiltrate the gaming industry as well. Reports suggest that Rockstar Games is proactively developing age verification protocols for GTA 6, aimed at regulating access to GTA Online, in-game messaging options, and the Snapmatic feature.
Former Developer Shares Perspective on Age Verification Impact
This move has sparked discussions among fans regarding the potential impact of age verification on the sales performance of Grand Theft Auto 6. Some players may find themselves unable to access GTA Online due to these new regulations.
In response to concerns raised by a fan on X (formerly Twitter), Vermeij commented, “It’s not something publishers enjoy implementing, but they may have no choice given the evolving laws in various countries and states.”
Yeah, this is a big thing now. Not something publishers like to do but they may not have a choice with the new laws in some countries & states.

He further elaborated, “It could hinder sales slightly. The demographic for GTA has matured over the years. However, I believe GTA 6 will eventually surpass the sales of GTA 5.”
It could hinder sales a little bit. I think the audience for gta is older now than previously. My money would still be on 6 outselling 5 eventually.

As Vermeij indicates, the introduction of age verification might not cause catastrophic damage to GTA 6’s sales performance. The game’s hype levels are unprecedented, and fans are immensely eager for its arrival.
Meanwhile, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, has been addressing speculation regarding the price point of the upcoming title while easing concerns about possible delays in its release. For now, the timeline remains set for May 26, 2026.
