GTA Developer Shares Original Plans for Vice City’s Wanted System Feature

According to a developer who contributed to GTA: Vice City, the game’s Wanted system was initially intended to be much more intricate than what players experienced in 2002.

Similar to other early games in the Rockstar series, GTA: Vice City features a basic Wanted system. When players reach a Wanted level, they will be pursued by police in the 80’s 3D game, who typically spawn at a predetermined distance from the player.

Obbe Vermeij, the former technical director at Rockstar, recently addressed a query on social media regarding the Vice City Wanted system. He explained that the location where police appear on the map when players are wanted was originally intended to be more dynamic, and the current fixed spawn point is a remnant of that concept.

“Vermeij explained that during his time in Vice City, he tested out predetermined locations for spawning police cars. His goal was to ensure that they would appear at the perfect moment and with the appropriate initial speed, directly in front of the player.”

According to Vermeij, who departed from Rockstar in 2009, there are only a handful of police spawn points remaining in the game. This is because setting up more of these spawn points was deemed to be too troublesome.

GTA has improved its Wanted system in comparison to Vice City, with police spawns now being more dynamic, as Vermeij had envisioned for the fourth installment. Additionally, Rockstar has enhanced the police’s abilities by allowing them to utilize civilian vehicles during prolonged pursuits and introducing new vehicles such as helicopters.

The developer has yet to reveal what they will include for the police and Wanted mechanic in GTA 6, which is based in Vice City. Fans of the franchise will have to remain patient and anticipate what additions will be made.
