The upcoming Minecraft Summer Drop 2025 introduces an innovative feature: the player locator bar. This addition will revolutionize multiplayer gameplay, eliminating the need for frantic searches to find your friends. Instead, the bar presents colorful indicators that allow you to easily track the location of friends or any other online players. Curious about how to activate this feature? Read on to discover how to enable and utilize the player locator bar in Minecraft.
Activating the Player Locator Bar in Minecraft
Currently, the player locator bar is only available in the latest snapshots of both the Java and Bedrock editions, specifically through the beta or preview versions. By default, this feature is enabled, but it’s worth noting that it is not yet included in the stable version release scheduled for the Minecraft Summer Drop 2025.
If you’re a server admin or creator who is unable to see the player locator bar, follow these instructions to enable it in both editions:
Enable the Player Locator Bar in Java Edition
In the Java version, Mojang has made this exciting feature a permanent part of the game, starting with Snapshot 25W17A. To activate it, follow these steps:
- Launch the Minecraft Launcher and begin the latest snapshot.
- Start your multiplayer world by entering the server address along with the world name.
- Invite your friends; you will see the locator bar overlay on your XP bar.
- If the bar does not appear, press the T key to open the in-game chat and input: /gamerule locatorBar true to enable it.
- You can adjust the indicators using the command: /waypoint modify <player tag> <attributes>.

Activate the Player Locator Bar in Bedrock Edition
For those using the Bedrock edition, enabling the player locator is slightly different during world creation. Here’s how you can do it:
- Open your Minecraft Launcher and start the latest Bedrock preview.
- Create a new world, which will take you to the world customization menu.
- Select the multiplayer tab and navigate to the bottom-right corner.
- Toggle the locator bar option on and proceed to start your Minecraft world.
- Once in the game, invite your friends, and the locator bar with indicators will be visible above your XP bar.

If you’ve launched a new Minecraft world without activating this feature, there’s no need to worry. Just like in Java, you can enable it from in-game by typing /gamerule locatorBar true. Note, however, that the ability to modify the locator bar is not available in the Bedrock Edition.
How to Utilize the Player Locator Bar in Minecraft
The player locator bar is consistently displayed when other players are present in your world. It may briefly vanish for five seconds when you gain XP, replacing the view with the XP bar. If you’re engaged with the anvil or enchanting table interface, the XP bar will again take precedence over the locator bar.

Maximize your experience with this feature by paying attention to the small square indicators known as waypoints. Each waypoint is color-coded, representing different players unless modified. The distance to each player is indicated as follows:
- Square: 0-179 blocks
- Circle: 179-230 blocks
- Small Square: 230-281 blocks
- Small Circle: 281+ Blocks
Additionally, if you see small white arrows on the waypoints, these indicate elevation differences. An arrow pointing up or down signifies whether a player is at a higher or lower level than you.
No more needing to type out locations in chat—continue your adventures, whether mining or exploring, while your friends can easily follow you using the waypoints.
How to Conceal Your Location from the Player Locator Bar
Although the player locator bar offers many benefits, you may prefer some privacy. Here’s how to discreetly hide from this feature in Minecraft:
- Crouching or Sneaking: When you crouch, it will conceal your waypoint. However, be aware that this will significantly reduce your movement speed unless you have the Swift Sneak enchantment.
- Wearing a Carved Pumpkin or Mob Head: Equip a carved pumpkin or a mob head to hide your waypoint. While obtaining a mob head can be challenging, it provides better visibility than a carved pumpkin.
- Using the Potion of Invisibility: Drinking a potion of invisibility renders you invisible to both the locator bar and your friends, making it a highly effective way to remain hidden.

Another stealthy method is to approach other players from behind while sneaking. Just remember to crouch to avoid revealing your position!
That summarizes everything you need to know about using the player locator bar in Minecraft. Have you already tried this new feature with your friends? Share your experiences in the comments below!
