The Hershey Company has announced a strategic return to its classic recipes for all Reese’s products, a decision set to take effect in 2027. This change comes on the heels of recent criticism regarding the use of lower-quality ingredients in some of its offerings.

This shift follows a public critique from Brad Reese, the grandson of Reese’s founder H. B.Reese. In a heartfelt letter, he expressed his concerns about the company’s decision to modify the ingredients in certain products, prompting questions about whether the brand was still upholding the high standards that initially established its reputation.

Hershey Responds to Criticism with Recipe Updates

The company clarified that while their flagship Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups have maintained traditional milk and dark chocolate, certain seasonal and smaller products, such as the mini Easter eggs, had been altered to include coatings with reduced chocolate content.

According to Hershey, these items will revert to using “classic milk chocolate and dark chocolate recipes” starting next year, marking a significant commitment to quality.

In its statement, Hershey emphasized its dedication to evolving with consumer preferences.“Hershey is committed to making products consumers love, which necessitates a continual assessment of our recipes to align with changing tastes and expectations, ” the company noted.

Brad Reese’s concerns were originally voiced in a letter sent to Hershey’s corporate brand manager on Valentine’s Day and later shared on LinkedIn. His poignant message raised a critical question: “How does The Hershey Co.continue to position Reese’s as its flagship brand, a symbol of trust, quality, and leadership, while quietly replacing the very ingredients (Milk Chocolate + Peanut Butter) that built Reese’s trust in the first place?”

In response, Hershey admitted to making several recipe adjustments in recent years, citing shifts in consumer demand and the increasing costs of cocoa as influential factors in these decisions.

Beyond the updates for Reese’s, Hershey is also planning a broader overhaul of its product line. This includes a move towards utilizing natural colors in its confections and revising the Kit Kat recipe to enhance its creaminess. Furthermore, the company intends to boost its research and development budget by 25% next year to foster innovation.
