Hideo Kojima’s latest masterpiece, Death Stranding 2, has solidified its status as one of this year’s standout games. However, even the celebrated creator isn’t immune to oversights, which is exactly what he discovered during a recent trip to Australia.
Exploring the Australian Landscape
This eagerly awaited sequel sees players once again stepping into the role of Norman Reedus as he embarks on a new journey. The narrative now transports players from a post-apocalyptic America to the vast landscapes of Australia, requiring extensive research to authentically represent this sunburnt country.
Attention to Wildlife Detail
As part of its commitment to authenticity, Kojima Productions aimed to incorporate a wide variety of Australian wildlife into the game. However, it was during a visit to the Taronga Zoo in Sydney that Kojima came upon a humorous realization regarding one of his choices in the game.
Kojima’s Lighthearted Admission
During a discussion with filmmaker George Miller, known for his work on the “Mad Max”series, Kojima recounted his zoo visit. He shared that while he admired the notable avian species, he realized some of them weren’t accurately represented in their in-game habitats.
“I went to the zoo this morning. I saw some famous birds, but I realized they don’t live in the right area in the game, ” Kojima explained to an amused audience.“So, sorry, that’s a little mistake by me. I found out in the zoo today.”

In Death Stranding 2, players will find missions that include rescuing kangaroos from bushfires, further underscoring the game’s commitment to environmental themes.
Potential for Future Updates
Although I may not be an expert on Australian wildlife, having played for more than 100 hours, it’s clear that Kojima has a keen eye for detail. Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if a future patch tweaked certain animal placements to align with geographical accuracy.
