A popular harem anime, The Quintessential Quintuplets, is set to return with a new TV special this year. However, many viewers believe this is an overextension of the franchise.
If you’re a fan of the harem subgenre, you’re likely familiar with the Nakano quintuplets and their tutor-turned-love-interest, Fuutaro. The series first premiered in 2019 and has garnered a dedicated fanbase thanks to its blend of romance and familial themes.
The anime received a sequel in 2021, followed by a movie in 2022. Throughout the series, each Nakano sister navigates their own journey while developing feelings for Fuutaro. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!)
In true harem fashion, viewers have long speculated which sister would ultimately capture Fuutaro’s heart. This question reached a satisfying conclusion in the movie when Fuutaro recalls his childhood love for Yotsuba. With this memory, the pair unite and eventually marry.
That film put a cap on the story, and many fans felt it should have marked the end of the narrative. The resolution between Fuutaro and Yotsuba seemed fitting, even though it disappointed some viewers.
Despite this, the franchise is set to expand further with a new TV special. This latest installment, The Quintessential Quintuplets TV Special, will debut in September, offering viewers a glimpse into Fuutaro and Yotsuba’s honeymoon, with her sisters tagging along—a move that some fans find peculiar.
Critics argue that continuing the story doesn’t add to the overall plot and instead tests fans’ patience. One Twitter user remarked, “Milking it for all it’s worth.”
Another chimed in mockingly, “With how much they are milking the franchise, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see ‘Quintessential Quintuplets: The Next Generation’.”
One viewer questioned, “Why did Yotsuba win if you’re just going to pretend we have a ‘harem’ route? Just give us the harem ending.”
Another fan stated, “I’ve never seen a harem anime with a clear winner continue like this before.”
A fan suggested, “If they’re going to continue the series, they should commission Shaft to give *QQ* the Brotherhood treatment.”
The Quintessential Quintuplets: Honeymoon Arc is being animated by Bibury Animation Studios and is scheduled for release on September 20, 2024.
