The developers behind Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry, have recently addressed player concerns regarding the game’s difficulty, emphasizing that players will always have multiple avenues to explore.
After an agonizing eight-year hiatus, fans of the original Hollow Knight are now maneuvering through a series of challenging bosses in the highly anticipated sequel, Silksong. This latest installment in the Metroidvania genre is packed with plenty of optional content, ensuring hours of exploration and challenge. However, many players have noted its steep difficulty curve.
Lengthy runs back to boss encounters, unpredictable attack patterns, and demanding platforming sections contribute to an even tougher experience than the first game. Some players have resorted to mods to ease the initial difficulty, even minimizing basic enemy damage.

At the ACMI Game Worlds exhibition in Melbourne, Australia, game co-curator Jini Maxwell engaged Team Cherry team members Ari Gibson and William Pellen in discussions about the game’s difficulty levels, which was a primary focus.
Gibson acknowledged that Silksong is significantly more intricate than its predecessor. He articulated that the design encourages players to make choices throughout their journey.“What’s important for us is that we enable players to deviate from the main path. One may pursue a direct route to completion while another might choose to explore all the unique challenges and secrets within the game, ” he shared.
He further noted, “Silksong contains its share of challenging moments; however, the freedom granted within its world provides players with multiple options regarding their direction and activities.” If players find themselves entrenched in a difficult boss battle, Gibson reassured them, stating, “That’s perfectly fine. Players have the ability to explore, learn, or even bypass certain challenges entirely instead of feeling stuck.”

The exhibition featured exclusive hand-drawn artworks from Silksong, crafted by the Team Cherry artists.
Understanding the Increased Difficulty in Silksong
Players familiar with both titles can immediately recognize the contrasting gameplay dynamics. With Hornet’s distinct movement abilities, a revamped system for weapon upgrades, and an intricate quest framework, Silksong introduces many elements absent from Hollow Knight.
Due to these enhancements, adjustments to enemy behaviors were necessary. Gibson explained, “Hornet, being faster and more adept than the Knight, required us to elevate the complexity and intelligence of even the most basic enemies.”
Pellen elaborated, noting, “The foundational design of the standard ant warrior reflects the mechanics of the original Hornet boss, incorporating similar moves like dashes and jumps while introducing evasion techniques.” He stressed that rather than downgrading Hornet’s abilities, Team Cherry opted to enhance all enemy types to ensure they remained competitive.
This approach not only enriches the gameplay experience but also ensures that players feel the thrill of the challenge as they embark on their journey through Silksong.
