With the debut of the first episode of Severance Season 2, fans are buzzing with speculation about future plot developments. The anticipation has built up over several years, particularly given the production challenges the series faced amidst broader industry upheaval.
The highly acclaimed Apple TV+ show Severance experienced a lengthy hiatus between its inaugural and second seasons. This delay was influenced by various factors, including significant national crises and a dedicated pursuit of narrative perfection.
One pivotal aspect of the show’s development was the series of Hollywood strikes, which significantly affected the production schedule of many films and series, including Severance.
Potential Impact of Hollywood Strikes on Future Episodes
In a recent interview with THR, Dan Erickson, the creative mind behind Severance, shed light on how real-world events shape the narrative. He expressed that the ongoing crises inform his storytelling in a meaningful way. “It affects it a lot,” he stated. “Those things make their way into the text of the show kind of organically.”

Erickson elaborated on how the impact of remote work and the eventual return to in-office collaboration influenced the writing of Season 2. “When we were making Season 1, we didn’t really know what the return to work would feel like. The experiences we had during COVID shaped the narrative in Season 2,” he explained.
Moreover, he noted that the shift back to in-person work led to vital discussions surrounding workplace expectations and employee rights, all of which echo the undercurrents in Severance. “That experience changed the way people were talking about work, how much of ourselves we owe to our employer, and what we should expect in return,” he mentioned.
These societal conversations have not only made their way into the show but also played a role in the recent Hollywood strikes. According to Erickson, “It’s not a straight line, but I think that those kinds of conversations led to things like the strikes. People are reassessing what work should feel like, and that made it into the story. Season 2 has dealt with many of the issues faced in real-time during Season 1.”
Looking ahead to Season 3, Erickson acknowledges that contemplating the show’s trajectory is influenced by the realities of the strikes. “We can’t help but think about the experiences of the strike line and advocating for better conditions. It inevitably informs our thinking about the future of the show,” he stated.
While the conclusion of Season 2 remains a mystery, the idea of an Innie-led work stoppage is tantalizingly poised in the narrative. Regardless, fans can expect Mark S. and his crew to stir up significant upheaval in the ongoing season.
The first episode of Severance Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+, with a total of 10 episodes planned for this season and a third season already in the works.
