The highly-anticipated second season of House of the Dragon is quickly approaching, and the latest trailer gives even more insight into the upcoming plot. Scheduled to premiere on June 16, the second season will continue the story right after the events of the first season finale, as the Westeros Civil War, also known as the Dance of the Dragons, officially commences.
The Prophecy Continues in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2
The trailer emphasizes the central focus of the war: the Iron Throne. Rhaenyra’s voice emphasizes that being a ruler is not just about governing, but also protecting the kingdom.
The mention of the Prophecy of Ice and Fire from Season 1 is specific to Rhaenyra, who is the only one aware of it. As Rhaenyra speaks, the screen depicts the Wall in the North as a symbol of ice, along with dragon eggs engulfed in flames, representing fire.
These images also evoke the two most well-known surviving members of the Targaryen dynasty—Daenerys (portrayed by Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington), who both play crucial parts in fulfilling the prophecy.
The introduction also establishes the context for our two competitors, Rhaenyra and Aegon, as they compete for the rightful claim to the throne.
House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Promises War
Despite its brevity, the trailer stays true to the creators’ promise, showcasing dragons soaring above, including a magnificent golden one that is likely Aegon’s Sunfire.
In the upcoming season, viewers can anticipate an increase in dragon battles as five new dragons are introduced. These fierce confrontations were only briefly mentioned in Season 1. As Rhys Ifans portrays Otto Hightower, he reminds his grandson that the powerhouses will join forces to support their mission, while armies are seen gathering, foreshadowing an impending war.
The armies consist of horses bearing the Lannister emblem and a fleet decorated with Velaryon flags, highlighting important participants in the conflict.
Although the Lannisters have chosen to align themselves with Aegon, Corlys Velaryon (played by Steve Toussaint) and his wife, Rhaenys (portrayed by Eve Best), remain loyal to Rhaenyra, as seen in the trailer when Corlys vows to follow her orders with his ships.
The inclusion of armies and dragons suggests that Season 2 will be intense and merciless.
The trailer also gives viewers a glimpse of new characters. A more detailed introduction to Cregan Stark (portrayed by Tom Taylor), an ancestor of beloved Game of Thrones characters, foreshadows the importance of this character in the series.
Similarly, the trailer also features Alyn of Hull (played by Abubakar Salim). According to Entertainment Weekly, he is set to make his debut as a member of the Velaryon fleet, consistent with his appearance in the trailer. However, as the series develops, his character is anticipated to play a more significant role.
3. Aegon’s Vengeance in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2
Showrunner Ryan Condal revealed to EW that Aegon and the other children of the main characters will play larger roles in Season 2, as seen in the trailer where Aegon is depicted nonchalantly brandishing a dagger and expressing his thirst for vengeance to his council.
Despite not yet experiencing any significant defeats, it is evident that the Greens’ luck will not hold forever (as readers of Fire & Blood are aware of the impending fate of Aegon’s dynasty).
While previous trailers centered on Rhaenyra’s grief over her son, this one shifts the focus to Aegon’s reaction to the turmoil, suggesting that both sides will suffer in the war.
4. ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2: More Tension for the Targaryen Family
Despite Alicent’s warnings about the war, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) accuses her of showing too much concern for their adversary.
Despite the doomed nature of Alicent and Rhaenyra’s childhood friendship, it is intriguing to witness Alicent’s hesitation, mirroring the doubts Rhaenyra had before her son’s tragic death. However, Alicent’s warnings about not wanting to win the war in such a manner foreshadow Aemond’s potential extreme actions in Season 2, which could ultimately alienate even his doting mother.
With his battle-proven dragon, Daemon is the most valuable asset of the Blacks, but his words, “The only hope for the Realm is a strong leader to unite it,”are also cause for concern as he prepares for war. However, his loyalty is put to the test when Rhaenyra asks if he will accept her as his queen and ruler.
Despite the troubles ahead for these lovers, the infighting between key members of the Greens and Blacks guarantees an abundance of Targaryen drama this season.
5. Will ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Bring the Battle to King’s Landing?
The heart of the Targaryen dynasty lies in King’s Landing, home to the iconic Iron Throne. However, with infighting among the Targaryen family, it is certain that the capital will face an assault before the conclusion of the war.
Despite the chaos in the streets, evident by the fleeing of Alicent and Helaena (Phia Saban), a short interaction between Daemon and Rhaenys reveals that the capital city is still not secure. Daemon informs Rhaenys that they must make their way to King’s Landing.
Despite the ambiguity of who is included in this statement, the dialogue takes place between the two most experienced Dragonriders of the Blacks, foreshadowing potential danger for the capital.
6. About House Of The Dragon
The prequel series, House of the Dragon, is based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood and serves as a continuation of HBO’s popular show, Game of Thrones.
Taking place three hundred years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will depict Westeros during the reign of the Targaryen family, before the dragons became extinct. The series will focus on the Dance of the Dragons, a civil war between Aegon II and Rhaenyra, siblings who battled for the throne following the passing of their father, Viserys I.
The show, directed by Ryan Condall and Miguel Sapochnik, features a star-studded cast including Paddy Considine as Viserys I Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Craney as Aegon II Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Rhaenys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole, and Graham McTavish.
