Launched on December 6, 2022, the PlayStation Access Controller was developed in collaboration with AbleGamers, a charity dedicated to improving accessibility in gaming for individuals with disabilities. The innovative design features modular controls, allowing users to customize the layout to suit their unique needs. The buttons are arranged in a circular format, complemented by a joystick that can be placed flat on a surface.

Enhancing Performance with the PlayStation Access Controller

Alejandro’s life took a major turn at the age of 22 when he suffered a neck fracture while diving at Jones Beach. As he began his return to gaming post-injury, he quickly realized that traditional controllers were not accommodating for him. He recounted, “I put the controller on my stomach and tilted back in my chair. I was using the sides of my thumbs to move around and press the buttons. I just kept practicing and practicing.”

However, the Access Controller has fundamentally altered his gaming experience, elevating his performance to a competitive level. Courtney stated, “You can compete almost as effortlessly as someone using a regular controller. It levels the playing field and allows disabled gamers to achieve their true potential.” He emphasized the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, saying, “The world isn’t really designed for us, but fortunately, the Access Controller is tailored for individuals like us, empowering us to reach our gaming aspirations.” Among these aspirations is participation in tournaments like the PS Fortnite Cup, where Alejandro is actively recruiting players for Quad Gods. “We’re addressing a gap that has existed for too long,” he said. “We offer hope to a vast community.” Many people with disabilities may feel discouraged after their injury, but Courtney believes the Quad Gods initiative helps transform that mindset.

Quad Gods: Advocating for Awareness and Inclusion

Rehabilitation engineer Jared Grier, who designs assistive equipment at The Shepherd Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta, collaborates with AbleGamers and promotes the PlayStation Access Controller at significant events such as Evo. He shared the noteworthy influence the Quad Gods have within the gaming community: “Teams like Quad Gods are essential because they amplify awareness, provide exposure, and combat stigma. They highlight the remarkable resilience of adaptive gamers who overcome their challenges to compete effectively.”

The Access Controller serves a dual purpose; it not only enables high-level competition but also aids in rehabilitation, offering joy to those who may otherwise have felt disconnected from gaming. Referring to his own experience after a spinal injury from a fall, Grier remarked: “Gaming is instrumental in engaging our patients. Customizable control layouts promote arm movement, enhance range of motion, and improve endurance. It’s rewarding to create moments of joy for patients who face similar challenges.” He concluded, “Before the Access Controller, finding an accessible gaming solution felt like solving a puzzle. Now, we have a viable product.”
