For iPhone users who enjoy TikTok, there is an important setting to consider disabling, especially if your device’s storage is nearing capacity.

As of January 19, 2025, a ban on TikTok in the United States was initiated, but with President Trump signing an order the following day, the enforcement of this ban was postponed until April 5 of the same year.

In line with this development, apps owned by ByteDance—such as TikTok, CapCut, and Lemon8—are no longer available for download on the Apple or Google App Stores. Should you acquire a new phone, accessing these apps again will not be possible.

However, beyond being unable to redownload the apps, there’s a critical iOS setting that could lead to losing access to TikTok altogether, especially for those who frequently find their phone storage full.

Why TikTok Users Should Disable the iOS Offload Setting

Within the settings of the Apple App Store, users will encounter an option labeled “offload unused apps” that activates when storage approaches its limit.

This feature allows iOS to automatically delete some apps that you haven’t used recently, thereby freeing up space for new photos or videos on your device.

According to Apple, “When you’re low on storage, you can have your iPhone automatically remove unused apps.”

However, Apple does not specify the duration required for TikTok to be considered “unused” before it gets uninstalled through the App Offload feature. Once removed, regaining access to the app hinges on whether it becomes available again in the App Store.

To safeguard your access to TikTok, follow these instructions to disable the App Offload feature:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Apps > App Store
  2. Scroll to the bottom and locate the “Offload Unused Apps” toggle
  3. Switch it off

It is likely that Apple will not reinstate TikTok or any other ByteDance-owned apps on the App Store until ByteDance divests its ownership. Currently, it remains uncertain if this sale will occur before the April 5, 2025 deadline. Notably, there is speculation that YouTube phenomenon MrBeast might emerge as a prospective co-owner in such a scenario.
