The unveiling of a new humanoid robot has captivated audiences with its strikingly realistic appearance, leaving many skeptical of its true identity as a machine.

At its 2025 Tech Day event held on November 5, the Chinese automotive company XPENG showcased this next-generation android, which exhibits fluid facial expressions and movements closely resembling that of a human.

Footage from the event quickly gained traction on social media platforms in China, with numerous viewers convinced that a person was concealed within a costume. To dispel any rumors and confirm the authenticity of the robot, XPENG CEO He Xiaopeng released a subsequent video wherein engineers unzipped the robot’s back, exposing its intricate mechanical framework.

Unveiling the Technology Behind the Robot

The humanoid, named IRON, boasts an impressive 82 degrees of freedom throughout its body. Additionally, it features a human-like spine, bionic muscles, and a layer of flexible synthetic skin designed for realistic motions, as reported by Global Times.

In a subsequent viral demonstration, XPENG engineers cut open a portion of IRON’s lower leg, showcasing its mechanical joints, while the robot calmly ambled away, illustrating its internal mechanics in real-time.

XPENG has indicated that this innovative humanoid operates on a solid-state battery and is being specifically designed for service-oriented applications, ranging from reception duties to security patrols.

This latest humanoid robot exemplifies China’s vigorous advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics, a trend that includes developments like self-driving vehicles and autonomous robots capable of playing sports and executing complex tasks.

Moreover, there are reports about robots participating in significant human events, such as a robot being awarded a diploma at a graduation ceremony, underscoring a growing synergy between humans and AI.
