A remarkable individual, who lost his right arm in a motorcycle accident, has taken an innovative approach to gaming by designing his own custom one-handed gaming controller, named Ercham. To support the manufacturing of this groundbreaking device, he intends to launch a Kickstarter campaign.
The Birth of a Custom Gaming Solution
The creator, known as Joe, faced significant challenges while trying to adapt to traditional keyboard and mouse setups. This experience led him to develop a unique solution that consolidates both inputs into a single unit tailored specifically for one-handed operation.
Innovative Design Process
Joe has been proactive in sharing insights into the development of the Ercham controller, utilizing both the device’s dedicated website and various subreddits to gain support and visibility. Initially, he experimented with a Razer Tartarus keypad, modifying it by affixing a mouse to create a functional one-handed controller.
This early version enabled him to “move, aim, click, shoot, and use abilities again, ” demonstrating that the concept was indeed viable, despite the prototype’s rough edges.
Refinement and Production
Building on that initial concept, Joe has since developed a more sophisticated model from the ground up. This iteration maintains a similar layout but is encapsulated within a unified housing. Key features of the enhanced controller include an integrated mouse sensor, comprehensive keybinding access, and a hand strap designed to minimize hand movement, which is especially beneficial for extended gaming sessions.
Additionally, he has implemented custom firmware to ensure that the device operates as a plug-and-play solution, circumventing potential issues with third-party software that could interfere with anti-cheat mechanisms.
Aiming for Accessibility
Currently, the Ercham controller is in production, and Joe is committed to keeping potential users informed with updates posted on the project’s dedicated page. He expressed a particular desire for the controller to assist children with physical disabilities and gamers who need enhanced accessibility options.
