Instagram Unveils New Edits App During TikTok Turmoil, But Access Will Be Delayed

Instagram has recently unveiled a new application named Edits, aimed at challenging TikTok during a tumultuous period marked by discussions around a potential ban in the United States. However, interested users will need to exercise a bit of patience before they can access it.

TikTok has long faced the threat of a ban in the U.S., with numerous political figures, including President Joe Biden, citing national security concerns. These concerns prompted calls for ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to divest ownership of its platform.

In an effort to curb TikTok’s presence, Biden enacted legislation that would lead to a ban if the company did not sell its U.S. operations. Despite a temporary blackout on January 19, TikTok has re-emerged, continuing to connect users worldwide.

The Rise of Competitors

As TikTok navigates these challenges, competitors are vying for its audience. Platforms like Lemon8 and Rednot have attracted many users, who refer to themselves as “TikTok refugees.” Seizing the opportunity, Instagram is now positioning itself with the introduction of Edits.

Introducing Edits

While Instagram already offers Reels as its competitor to TikTok, Edits takes a different approach by providing a distinct application filled with creative capabilities. As Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, explained on January 19, Edits aims to be a comprehensive creative toolkit.

“Edits is more than just a video editing app; it features a variety of creative tools,” Mosseri elaborated. “Users will find a dedicated tab for inspiration, a space to jot down early ideas, and a significantly enhanced camera quality. The app will include standard editing functions, the option to share drafts with friends and fellow creators, and valuable insights for those who choose to publish their videos on Instagram.”

Availability of Edits

For those eager to dive into Edits, there are some immediate limitations—especially for Android users. According to Mosseri, the app will not be available for download until next month. During this time, Instagram plans to collaborate with select video creators to gather feedback and enhance user experience.

Currently, Edits is available for pre-order on the Apple iOS store, but Android users will need to wait for further announcements regarding their access.
