AMD has been dominating the field of APUs, but according to a recent leak, this may not last for much longer.
Overall, AMD holds a significant presence in the handheld market. Their powerful 7840U 780M combination of CPU and GPU has been utilized in various devices, such as the Steam Deck and Ayaneo Flip DS. The Asus ROG Ally, powered by the AMD Z1 Extreme, is also just a variation of the same AMD APU.
According to leaked shipping manifests, it seems that Intel is aiming to enter the handheld market and develop a mobile processor with impressive integrated graphics. This information supports the idea that Intel is indeed working on such a product.
It has been reported that Intel is currently developing a high-end mobile CPU with a strong GPU integrated onto the same die. This setup is quite similar to the Strix Halo chip that AMD is also developing.
A Lenovo project manager announced that a project named Intel Arrow Lake Halo is currently underway. While it is unclear if this project is related to the APU, the similar naming convention suggests a potential connection.
According to Videocardz’s report, the leaked information indicated that the Arrow Lake Halo would include 6 LNC ‘Lion Cove’ and 8 WeT ‘Skymont’ Cores, with graphics at GT3 level. The leaked document from AdoredTV suggests that this is equivalent to 320 execution units, or 20 Xe-Cores.
Despite initial claims that the Arrow Lake Halo project had been put on hold, it is intriguing to see its appearance on the shipping manifest and hear assertions from a Lenovo representative.
Despite the ongoing development of the Arrow Lake Halo project, it is unlikely to be included in products in the near future. Additionally, once it is released, it will have to contend with strong competition from AMD, who has already established itself as a leader in this field.
