On the 19th, a press conference was held at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, featuring Kim Seon-ho, the actor from the Disney+ series ‘The Tyrant.’
‘The Tyrant’ is an action thriller that follows the journey of a group of individuals who are brought together by a failed delivery that results in the disappearance of the final sample of the ‘Tyrant Program’. With their own agendas, they engage in a dangerous game of pursuit and evasion.
On the day of its release, Kim Seon-ho shared his thoughts on ‘The Tyrant,’ stating, “I am extremely delighted. Working alongside senior actors whom I deeply admire was a great experience. Looking back at the scenes we filmed together was thrilling and invigorating. Before the release, I was anxious about how my performance would be received, but as I watched the scenes, my heart raced with excitement and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Currently, I am busy filming a drama and initially, I was unable to gauge the reactions. It can be nerve-wracking, right? Despite the fun we had on set, the audience’s response is always unpredictable. To avoid any external influences during my current project, I refrained from
Director Park Hoon-jung’s latest masterpiece, ‘The Tyrant,’ is a continuation of his ‘Park Hoon-jung Universe,’ following his previous successful works, ‘Night in Paradise’ and ‘The Childe.’ Actor Kim Seon-ho, who previously collaborated with the director on ‘The Childe,’ was thrilled to reunite with him for this project. Kim recalls the challenging moments they faced while filming ‘The Childe,’ but also cherishes the enjoyable times spent with the director on set. He considers Park not only a brilliant filmmaker but also a close friend who shares his love for good food and walks. Being called back for the next project was a source of happiness and gratitude for Kim, who believes that the trust between
In the movie, Kim Seon-ho portrays ‘Chief Choi,’ the mastermind behind the ‘Tyrant Program,’ delivering a captivating performance. Through his portrayal of ‘Chief Choi,’ he successfully embodies a menacing character, a stark departure from his previous roles. When discussing his approach to bringing this character to life, he explained, “I couldn’t completely abandon my usual mannerisms or tone. In the past, my characters spoke quickly to keep the pace of the scene, but this time, I wanted to ground it. If I spoke too quickly, it would take away from the gravity of the situation. So, in that sense, it was unlike any role I’ve played before, and at times, I doubted myself. However, during
During his interview, he also discussed how the film ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ influenced his performance. He explained that upon the director’s recommendation, he had watched the film multiple times, paying particular attention to a scene where the character drinks coffee and the relaxed manner in which a gun is handled. Furthermore, he observed how individuals working in intelligence agencies were portrayed. He then went on to mention how his character, Chief Choi, was written as the youngest director, which presented a challenge for him as an actor. However, he believed that actors are born with inherent attributes such as appearance, voice, and vocal range, and he focused on finding ways to accurately portray Chief Choi within those parameters. He made a conscious effort to avoid being too
During the filming of the action scenes, Kim Seon-ho shared a frightening experience: “I have a fear of loud noises and I vividly remember a scene where I had to fire a gun with blank rounds. The sound was much louder indoors than I had expected. On the first take, I couldn’t keep my eyes open and had to ask for another chance. However, the director joked that we didn’t have many rounds left. I considered using earplugs to block out the noise, but then I wouldn’t be able to hear my co-star’s lines or my own, making it difficult to act. So, I decided to endure the loud noise without the earplugs, even though my ears were ringing afterwards.”
Kim Seon-ho shared his thoughts on working with his fellow actors. He had the opportunity to act alongside Cha Seung-won, who portrays the role of ‘Im Sang,’ an enforcer responsible for eliminating obstacles related to the ‘Tyrant Program,’ and Kim Kang-woo, who plays ‘Paul,’ a determined pursuer looking to steal the ‘Tyrant Program.’ When asked about his experience working with his senior co-stars, Kim Seon-ho praised Kim Kang-woo’s meticulous and detailed approach to acting. He also mentioned that Cha Seung-won was equally detail-oriented and provided him with valuable acting advice on set. Additionally, Kim Seon-ho shared that his co-stars’ encouragement and improvisation during
Upon reflection of his role, Kim Seon-ho expressed some disappointment in his acting abilities. He admitted to thinking during filming that he could have performed better with additional opportunities. Rather than feeling confident in his skills, he now sees areas where he needs improvement. Although he does not believe he has grown as an actor, he has gained a better understanding of what is essential. He credits noir films for teaching him the impact of silence and has recognized the need to further study and enhance his ability to deliver powerful silent performances.
Ultimately, Kim Seon-ho also shared his thoughts on his future projects and goals. He discussed the relationship between the ‘Witch’ universe and ‘The Tyrant,’ explaining that while ‘The Tyrant’ focuses on a specific species in the universe, ‘The Witch’ tells a different story. When inquiring about the potential for the universes to connect, the director mentioned the possibility and Seon-ho was intrigued. However, upon asking about ‘The Childe,’ he was informed that it does not exist within that universe. While this was initially disappointing, Seon-ho also found it to be a fitting conclusion. He acknowledged that if the director were to create a prequel or another universe, he may need to alter his
During his discussion, Kim Seon-ho expressed his aspirations as an actor, emphasizing the importance of becoming a desirable colleague. He acknowledged that setting a specific goal as an actor can be challenging, but his aim of being someone others want to work with remains significant. He believes that this goal helps him maintain a humble attitude, even during difficult times on set. Kim Seon-ho strives to continue embodying this virtue and hopes to positively impact those around him with his conduct. He admitted that he may falter at times, but his determination to uphold this goal will not waver.
