On August 20, 2024, Aniplex, TOHO, and various other entertainment companies obtained a court order in the United States to compel the disclosure of the identities associated with suspected leak accounts. The official order was issued by the courts on August 30, 2024. This legal action was initiated in response to unauthorized leaks of videos and images from the popular anime series Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen on Twitter.
These companies, all members of Japan’s Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), are taking an assertive approach in this legal fight. CODA is aiding in the legal proceedings, which have seen a surge in similar requests related to various anime shows, as they aim to collect information proactively and take legal steps against comparable accounts. This event marks the very first instance of a U.S. court issuing a discovery order concerning anime leaks.

It is a common occurrence for popular manga like Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer to experience chapter leaks ahead of their official release dates. However, this extensive investigation may lead to the exposure of the leakers’ identities.
This announcement follows a series of recent international incidents, including the leaks of episodes and videos in early August from various anime such as Rumiko Takahashi’s Ranma 1/2 manga adaptation, Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan anime, and the Gekijōban Mononoke: Karakasa film on public and piracy websites. Crunchyroll, a leading entity in the anime industry, also faced episode leaks during the spring season in early April.

Streaming platforms such as Netflix, Crunchyroll, and global entertainment technology and localization company Iyuno have announced their intentions to investigate and eradicate unauthorized content, as well as pursue legal action against those responsible.
Upon uncovering the identities of the leakers, CODA plans to impose stringent penalties, ensuring that those responsible face serious consequences.
