Is Peacemaker season 1 canon in James Gunn’s new DCU?

While many fans are eagerly waiting to discover the new DC Universe (DCU) initiated by James Gunn, the director and co-CEO of DC Studios revealed whether the first season of Peacemaker would be canon in this new cinematic universe.

The release of the film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom last December marked the end of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) after a decade of adventures. In order to revive the superhero franchise, Warner Bros. therefore called on James Gunn and Peter Safran, who have been the two leaders of DC Studios since October 2022.

And one of the flagship projects of this renewal of the DC cinematographic universe is obviously the next film Superman: Legacy, now known under the name of Superman, where we will be able to discover a new incarnation of the famous Man of ‘Steel. Indeed, it is David Corenswet who will take over the role of the character from Krypton, thus succeeding Henry Cavill’s Superman.

Because for his overhaul of DC Studios, Gunn decided to get a makeover and separate himself from almost all of the actors present in the DCEU. However, some have managed to keep their place in the new DCU, starting with John Cena, the interpreter of Peacemaker who we were first able to discover in the film The Suicide Squad (2021), and who subsequently sequel was entitled to its own series released in 2022 on HBO Max.

A series which will therefore join Gunn’s DCU since the director had previously explained that season 2 would be part of the continuity of his future shared universe. But then, what about the first season of Peacemaker?

Is Peacemaker season 1 part of the new DCU? Gunn’s response

Being used to responding to fans on networks, it was therefore on Threads (in a comment which was relayed on Reddit before being deleted) that Gunn returned to the question of the continuity of season 1 of Peacemaker, explaining that the first season of the HBO series was not canon.

Initially, the director of The Suicide Squad spoke following an article which gave details about season 2 of Peacemaker. We learned that the filming of the new season of the series with John Cena should be done in parallel with the filming of the next Superman film. Gunn also revealed that all the episodes had been written. The plot of the Peacemaker sequel should then take place after the events that we will see in the feature film dedicated to Clark Kent.

Concerning season 1 of Peacemaker, although it is not canon to the DCU, Gunn still wanted to clarify his point in another message, explaining that although “ALL the events [of the first season] do not part of the DCU” , there is still a “good part” that should be integrated. However, due to a few things that are “out of the box”, Gunn feels that it cannot truly be considered canon per se.

What elements of Peacemaker season 1 could be canon?

Gunn unfortunately did not provide explicit answers to this question. However, we can easily assume that the changes made will aim to ensure that the Peacemaker plot does not compromise the continuity of the new DCU.

Because although Peacemaker is relatively independent from the rest of the DCEU, the fact is that season 1 of the HBO series included several details that could conflict with Gunn’s overhaul of the DCU. Indeed, we will think in particular of the end of the first season, since fans were able to see the members of the Justice League, and in particular Jason Momoa’s Aquaman as well as Ezra Miller’s Flash, two characters who belong to the DCEU.

While waiting to learn more about this, superhero fans can be patient with the sequel to Invincible, since season 2 of the Amazon animated series resumes this week on Prime Video.
