Is the Upcoming Concept from BABYMONSTER Too Outdated? YG Entertainment Faces Backlash

Despite BABYMONSTER’s upcoming comeback, YG Entertainment is facing criticism as fans argue that their concept is outdated.

Currently, BABYMONSTER has been gaining significant interest due to their exceptional visuals and talented members. The group possesses all the necessary elements for success, from their members’ attractiveness to their impressive skills. Nevertheless, the management tactics of YG Entertainment for the girl group have been met with disapproval from the general public.

Despite being a beloved group, BABYMONSTER has faced challenges with their music quality and visual identity. Their debut music video, “BATTER UP,”received backlash for its chaotic styling, and their most recent release “SHEESH”has also been met with criticism. Fans believe that the company is trying to imitate the successful styles of their labelmates 2NE1 and BLACKPINK, but have yet to successfully execute it.

The upcoming comeback for the rookie girl group, announced by YG Entertainment, is set for July 1 with their single “Forever.”This will be their first comeback since their official debut three months ago, and it will showcase a more refined and elegant concept for the group. The official teaser for the comeback revealed the seven members donning chic black ensembles embellished with shimmering silver details.

Despite the similarities to TWICE’s recent album concept photos for “With YOU-th,”BABYMONSTER’s latest visuals have sparked criticism for their dated concept, leading to comparisons to JYP Entertainment’s group. This has resulted in disappointment from fans instead of gaining their love, with some pointing out its resemblance to early 2010s K-pop.

Fans believe that the group’s styling lacks innovation and unfortunately ages them, as it fails to showcase their youthful visuals and sophistication.

Despite BLACKPINK’s previous feedback, it is clear that there has been a noticeable difference. YG Entertainment appears to have lost its ability to create captivating visual concepts for their newer artists. While BLACKPINK has achieved international success as fashion icons, BABYMONSTER has consistently faced criticism for their unappealing fashion choices and concepts. This outdated image presents a challenge for the group in gaining acceptance from the Korean audience.

Despite being under the tutelage of YG Entertainment, known for cultivating strong and distinctive concepts, BABYMONSTER has failed to establish a clear identity, sparking extensive discussions on online community forums. Many have expressed empathy for the talented group and their struggles to find their place in the industry.

In addition to the worry, it was revealed earlier this year that YG Entertainment is currently without a creative director, causing even more frustration among BABYMONSTER’s fans. This lack is particularly difficult in the competitive world of K-pop, where innovative concepts are crucial and entertainment companies are required to be at the forefront of trends.

Just like SM Entertainment and HYBE, other major players in the entertainment industry, have a reputation for their meticulously crafted images and concepts. Even well-known groups such as aespa and NewJeans adhere to intricately designed “concept universes.”Without making significant changes to their strategy, BABYMONSTER runs the risk of being overshadowed by BLACKPINK, particularly as YG Entertainment continues to grapple with the group’s artistic direction.

Apart from the above, a few remarks from internet users in Korea stated,

  • “I understand YG has a unique aesthetic vision, but this is taking it too far… I had to double-check to make sure this was the official poster.”
  • “Can YG update its understanding of the current idol industry?”
  • “Does the company still think this approach is creative?”
  • “Honestly, they should really invest in new design elements.”
  • “It feels like they think this was a creative breakthrough.”
  • “This looks like an outdated magazine layout.”
  • “YG was so much more creating during the 2NE1 days. It wasn’t this bad before, what happened to YG… Did Hyun Suk actually approve this poster?”
