Is there a sequel to Aladdin (2019)?

Despite being one of the most popular live-action adaptations, there is uncertainty about whether Aladdin will receive a sequel.

Recently, Disney has been transforming several of their well-known animated movies into live-action versions. This trend includes classics such as Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin.

The original was released in 1992 and was a huge success. As expected, the live-action remake had high expectations to meet. Although it did not impress critics, receiving a 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes, its $1.054 billion box office revenue speaks for its success.

Since the release of the live-action film in 2019, there have been numerous mentions of a sequel. Is it indeed in the works?

Is a live-action Aladdin 2 happening?

Unfortunately, it appears that Aladdin 2 may not come to fruition, although there has been no official confirmation of this.

Over the past few years, Disney had been pursuing the concept of a sequel, but according to star Mena Massoud in a recent interview with Screen Rant, there has been a lack of progress due to the Hollywood strikes. Massoud stated, “I don’t have any updates. As you mentioned, the strikes have put everything on hold. Although they had been working on getting it off the ground for a while, I am unsure of its current status.”

It appears that Massoud is ready to move on, as he said: “We filmed in 2017. It has been six years since we completed the project. At a certain point, life just continues. I’m sure they have their own reasons.”

“Although I am aware that they had been attempting for a while, I am unsure of the specific challenges they faced. However, with the strike now concluded, it is possible that they will resume their efforts to launch it successfully.”

If an Aladdin live-action sequel were to ever happen, there are numerous potential storylines that could be explored. The original animated movie has already spawned multiple spin-offs, such as The Return of Jafar, The King of Thieves, and an animated TV series.

The summary of the original remake was as follows: “Aladdin, a charming street urchin, crosses paths with Princess Jasmine, the stunning daughter of Agrabah’s sultan. During his visit to her enchanting palace, Aladdin discovers a magical oil lamp that releases a witty and larger-than-life genie.”
