TWS’s newest release “hey! hey!”is receiving a variety of responses from Korean netizens, with some stating that the group is not performing well.
In January 2024, Pledis Entertainment introduced their first boy group in nine years, TWS, following the successful debut of SEVENTEEN. This also marked PLEDIS Entertainment’s first group to debut under the umbrella of HYBE Labels. TWS quickly made a name for themselves in the music industry with their debut mini-album “Sparking Blue”and the hit single “Plot Twist.”
Despite quickly gaining attention from the masses with their fresh and youthful school-themed concept and catchy, general public-friendly music, TWS has not yet made a significant impact among the fifth-generation K-pop groups, even five months after their debut.
Being referred to as “SEVENTEEN’s little brother,”TWS achieved remarkable initial sales, with “Sparking Blue”reaching 500,000 copies sold and “Plot Twist”maintaining a dominant position in digital music charts for multiple weeks.
Despite their high sales, the group’s visibility remains low, as none of its six members have achieved significant public recognition. This has led to debates and accusations of chart manipulation, due to the discrepancy between their sales and lack of fame among the public.
After a period of absence, TWS returned on June 5 with their latest release “hey! hey!”, marking their first comeback since their debut. Despite achieving the top spot on the MelOn 2024 chart, the song failed to chart on other domestic digital music platforms. This significant difference in performance has sparked doubts about the credibility of their chart rankings.
Prior to this, “Plot Twist”unexpectedly soared into the top 10 of the MelOn Top 100, surpassing well-known artists such as IU. This unexpected climb raised suspicions among many, as TWS has a limited online presence and a small fan base, indicating possible chart manipulation, also referred to as sajaegi.
Despite the ongoing controversies, “Plot Twist”continues to hold its place in the MelOn top 10. Many have high hopes for the song, believing it to be a strong contender for Song of the Year at the upcoming end-of-year awards ceremonies. However, the thought of a song that has faced accusations of chart manipulation receiving such recognition has left numerous K-pop fans disheartened and dissatisfied.
