Crunchyroll has made significant changes to its subscription model by eliminating its free tier and introducing a global price increase effective from early March 2026. This move is part of a larger strategy to redefine the perceived value of anime subscriptions as the platform shifts toward original gaming content, following a Netflix-like expansion.

In the United States, subscribers will notice a $2 increase across all paid tiers, with the Ultimate Fan subscription reaching $17.99. These adjustments come in light of a growing effort to deter piracy and encourage support for legitimate content providers amidst rising unauthorized content consumption.

Integrating Gaming into the Subscription Experience

As part of its evolving strategy, Crunchyroll has confirmed that it will be creating original video games under the new Crunchyroll Games banner. These titles aim to provide exclusive content intertwined with anime culture for its subscribers.

Game Vault Crunchyroll

While specific game titles have yet to be disclosed, the original games will be accessible within the Crunchyroll Game Vault, a library launched in November 2023 for Mega and Ultimate Fan subscribers. Currently hosting over 80 games, including visual novels and indie titles, Crunchyroll aims to enhance this collection to 100 games by summer 2026.

The forthcoming original titles will be developed in collaboration with Japanese publishers and international developers, ensuring they resonate deeply with anime fans. This integration of gaming reflects Crunchyroll’s perspective that anime and gaming cultures intersect significantly. Terry Li, Crunchyroll Games’ executive vice president, noted that the company’s objective is to craft interactive experiences that bring both beloved and new characters to life.“With original game publishing, we can craft bespoke interactive journeys that bring beloved and new characters to life, ” Li shared in an interview with Variety.

In conjunction with the expected new releases, the Game Vault will also include titles such as Battle Chef Brigade, Cuisineer, Dungeons of Hinterberg, Pepper Grinder, and Pikuniku, further enriching the platform’s diverse offerings.
