Bungie has provided players with reassurance regarding gear recovery in their upcoming game, Marathon. In their insights shared on February 23 via X/Twitter, the developer detailed essential networking and security measures in place for this new extraction shooter.
Understanding Disconnect Recovery in Marathon
The developer confirmed that players experiencing disconnections can typically reconnect and resume playing without losing their progress. However, Bungie is aware that reconnection isn’t always guaranteed.
Provisions for Disconnected Players
In their announcement, Bungie clarified that players who drop from sessions can return if their connection stabilizes. Notably, player characters will remain active in the game world during the disconnection. This function allows teammates the opportunity to defend the disconnected player until they are able to rejoin.
“When you are in the middle of a high-stakes run, losing your network connection can lead to a life-or-death situation. If you crash or get disconnected, your shell will remain in the game world and can be protected by your crew. Restart your network connection if needed and launch back into the game to reconnect to your shell and complete your run.”

Server-Side Issues and Gear Refund Policy
In cases where players lose connection due to server-related issues, Bungie aims to assist affected players by attempting to return their initial gear. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that this refund policy only applies under specific server error conditions and will not compensate for losses resulting from personal internet troubles or client-side complications.
“Gear refund only applies to a subset of server error conditions and will not cover gameplay losses due to Internet connectivity or client-side problems.”
Bungie’s Commitment to Fair Play
In tandem with these connectivity updates, Bungie has established a stringent policy against cheating in Marathon. Players found exploiting any game mechanics will face immediate and permanent bans, highlighting the developer’s dedication to an equitable gaming environment.
