Jeon Soyeon Takes the Helm in New Season of Unpretty Rapstar

Jeon Soyeon, the esteemed leader of the K-pop group I-DLE, has officially re-entered the spotlight of the Unpretty Rapstar franchise, but this time in a transformative role. Rather than competing, she will serve as the primary producer and solo host of the exciting new season titled Unpretty Rapstar: Hip Hop Princess.

A Reflective Journey

During a production press conference held on October 15, Soyeon shared her thoughts on her remarkable journey.“It’s been nine years since I first appeared as a high school student on Unpretty Rapstar. Now, returning as an adult to contribute to this meaningful project feels like an honor, ” she expressed. The former contestant, who rose to prominence through the show, now steps into the limelight to guide aspiring female rap artists toward success.

Creating a Global Hip-Hop Girl Group

Hip Hop Princess stands out as a joint venture between Korea and Japan, aimed at forming a global hip-hop girl group. Participants from both nations, each bringing diverse musical backgrounds encompassing hip-hop, K-pop, and J-pop, will collaborate on various aspects of their group’s identity—creating their music, choreography, styling, and video production. This format allows contestants to engage deeply in their creative processes.

High Standards for Talent and Creativity

Jeon Soyeon has made it clear that her expectations for contestants are higher than those typical of other survival programs.“Since this is Unpretty Rapstar, skill is everything, ” she asserted, emphasizing a focus on talent over charm or popularity that is often favored in other talent shows.

Soyeon further articulated that creativity and self-production are what make Hip Hop Princess distinctive.“What sets this show apart is the ability for participants to craft everything themselves—ranging from rap styles to performance attire. It’s an opportunity to evolve into a true artist, ” she elaborated.

Supportive Mentorship Team

The show will feature a stellar lineup of mentors, including renowned rapper Gaeko, talented dancer Riehata, and prominent Japanese artist Iwata Takanori, in addition to Jeon Soyeon herself. The highly anticipated Unpretty Rapstar: Hip Hop Princess is set to premiere on October 16, airing simultaneously on Mnet in Korea and on U-NEXT in Japan.
