Jujutsu Kaisen stands out among the Shonen series for its raw storytelling. Both the anime and manga take place in a world where negative emotions accumulate and manifest as cursed spirits, posing a threat to humanity’s well-being. The Jujutsu sorcerers brave danger as they confront these curses and mentor aspiring students to do the same.
Despite constant efforts, the fight against curses is ongoing as they will persist as long as humans exist. In addition, there are curse users who oppose sorcerers, resulting in numerous casualties within the Jujutsu society throughout the years.
Despite the anime currently only being in its third season, the manga is approaching its conclusion and has already depicted numerous tragedies. As the sorcerers continue to battle against villains, the death toll continues to rise. Below is a list of 38 characters who have perished in Jujutsu Kaisen thus far. Caution: This article contains significant spoilers for both the anime and manga.
1. Get rid of Itadori
At the start of the series, Itador’s grandfather Wasuke was introduced as a character. He was the first to die in Jujutsu Kaisen. Since Yuji’s parents were absent, Wasuke raised him. The young boy regarded Wasuke as a father figure. Eventually, Wasuke passed away due to old age, but not before asking Yuji to continue helping others so that he wouldn’t feel alone in his final moments.
2. Tadashi Okazaki
Tadashi was incarcerated at the Eishu Juvenile Detention Center for his criminal actions. He had caused the death of a young girl while driving without a license. In addition, he was one of the few witnesses to the cursed womb’s transformation in the sky. Tragically, after the curse reached maturity, it claimed the lives of both Tadashi and several staff members. Despite Yuji’s attempt to save him upon hearing Tadashi’s mother’s cries, it was too late as he had already passed away.
3. Nagi Yoshino
Although Nagi was Junpei’s sole family member as his mother, she did not adhere to the traditional parenting styles of forcing her children to obey her every command. Despite discovering that her son was skipping school, she chose to have faith in him and supported his decisions. Tragically, Nagi fell victim to a cursed spirit, but it was later revealed that Mahito had orchestrated the whole thing in an attempt to manipulate Junpei. Mahito had deliberately left Sukuna’s finger in Nagi’s home, leading to the curse’s intrusion.
4. Junpei Yoshino
After meeting Mahito, Junpei, an ordinary school student, became a curse user. However, Mahito only saw him as a toy and manipulated him for his own amusement. In a cruel act, Mahito even killed Junpei’s mother, pushing him to the brink of despair. Yuji and Junpei were already acquainted at this point, and Yuji attempted to rescue him. Tragically, Mahito transformed Junpei into a transfigured human and killed him in front of Yuji. This event left Yuji with a deep-seated hatred for Mahito until the very end.
Item
Kechizu was the youngest brother of Choso and Eso, and was also one of the Death Paintings. He possessed the Rot and Decay techniques, but was not as strong as his brothers. During a fight against Yuji, Nobara, and Megumi, he teamed up with Eso. However, Yuji and Nobara were able to defeat him, with Nobara’s technique destroying the cursed womb in a single blow.
6. That
Eso was the second-born brother among Choso and Kechizu. Unlike his brother Kechizu, he possessed a more human-like appearance and was also physically stronger. Besides having the abilities of Rot and Decay, Eso also possessed other techniques. Initially, Yuji and Nobara mistook the brothers for cursed spirits and engaged in a fight with them. However, it was later revealed that they were mistaken. Yuji was filled with guilt after witnessing Eso’s grief over Kechizu’s death, but he still had to fulfill his mission. In the end, Yuji and Nobara worked together to defeat Eso as he attempted to flee from the scene.
Geto Suguru
Despite being introduced as a ruthless antagonist, Suguru quickly became a beloved character among fans in the popular Jujutsu Kaisen series. His tragic death occurred in the prequel movie, leaving a gaping hole in the life of Gojo, who considered Suguru irreplaceable. The devastating betrayal and final defeat at the hands of Yuta ultimately led to Suguru’s fatal wound, causing immense grief for Gojo.
Rika Orimo
Yuta and Rika were childhood friends who made a promise to marry each other when they grew up. Sadly, Rika passed away in a car accident at the young age of eleven. Yuta’s overwhelming cursed energy caused her to transform into a special-grade apparition, and she stayed by his side for many years. Eventually, Yuta was able to break the curse and release Rika’s soul to the afterlife. However, her cursed spirit still remains with Yuta, supporting him in battles.
Rico Amanai
Riko was chosen as the Star Plasma Vessel, tasked with merging with Master Tengen to uphold the barriers. Although Master Tengen’s immortality was not infallible and required a new vessel every few centuries, there were those who opposed the idea of “tainting”Master Tengen by using other bodies. Despite having Gojo and Geto as her protectors, Riko ultimately met her demise at the hands of the assassin Toji Fushiguro.
Misato Kuroi
Misato Kuroi had been Riko’s guardian since the age of four. With Riko’s parents passing away long ago, Misato was her sole family. Despite her ability to see curses and possessing some decent skills, she was not a fighter and could not defend the young girl. After Riko’s passing, Shiu Kong took Misato away. Her death was only alluded to and not officially confirmed until later in the series.
Toji Fushiguro
Despite being a member of the Zenin Clan, Toji was never fully embraced by them due to his lack of cursed energy. However, he proved to be one of the most formidable characters in the series, possessing a heavenly-restricted body. His exceptional physical abilities and heightened senses enabled him to defeat even special-grade sorcerers. In fact, it was Toji’s lethal attack that forced Gojo to use the Reverse Cursed Technique for the first time, ultimately resulting in the death of the notorious Sorcerer Killer.
12. Yu Haibara
Yu Haibara was both a classmate and junior of Gojo and Geto, and a year after Riko’s passing, she and Kento Nanami were sent on a mission to eliminate a Grade 2 curse. When they arrived at the location, they discovered that the curse was actually a powerful deity, categorized as a Grade 1. As inexperienced sorcerers, they were no match for the deity and Haibara tragically lost her life. In response to this tragic event, Gojo eventually went to confront and defeat the powerful curse.
13. Character Profile: Kokichi Muta (Mechamaru)
The death of Kokichi Muta marked the first character death in the Shibuya Incident arc of Jujutsu Kaisen. His primary motive for assisting Mahito and his allies in infiltrating the Jujutsu School was to obtain a normal body through Idle Transfiguration. Despite possessing immense cursed energy due to his heavenly restricted body, Kokichi had a fragile physical form. Shortly after achieving his goal of obtaining a healthy body, Kokichi was killed by Mahito, just before the Shibuya Incident began.
14. Hanami
Hanami, one of the unregistered special-grade cursed spirits, formed an alliance with Jogo, Dagon, and Mahito. Along with Jogo and Choso, Hanami was tasked to keep Gojo confined for twenty minutes in order for Kenjaku to activate the Prison Realm. However, upon witnessing the callous murder of innocent civilians by the villains, Gojo’s annoyance turned to rage and he effortlessly vanquished Hanami.
15. Ogami
Ogami was a curse user who joined forces with Kenjaku in order to seal Gojo. She yearned to be able to commit crimes without restraint, but Gojo’s presence hindered her. Ogami possessed the power to call forth the physical or spiritual data of a deceased individual through their remains. Her life was cut short when she summoned Toji, whom she could not control.
16. Dagon
Although Dagon had appeared earlier in the series, it wasn’t until the Shibuya Incident arc that he fully matured. Despite Nanami, Naobito, Maki, and Megumi teaming up to face him, they were no match for Dagon’s immense power. However, Toji unexpectedly entered the domain and was able to defeat Dagon with ease, relying solely on his instincts. Dagon had underestimated Toji, who lacked cursed energy, and ultimately suffered the consequences.
17. Naobito Zenin
Despite being a powerful sorcerer and leader of the Zenin Clan, Naobito found himself fighting on the front lines during the Shibuya Incident. He played a crucial role in the defeat of Dagon, using his skills to prevent the cursed spirit from levitating and allowing Toji to deliver the final blow. However, as the dust settled and Dagon’s domain was closed, another cursed spirit, Jogo, emerged and attacked the already wounded sorcerers. Despite their injuries, both Nanami and Maki managed to survive the assault, but unfortunately, Naobito succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
Mimiko Hasaba
Suguru rescued Mimiko and her twin sister, Nanako, from their village where they were being mistreated and held captive. In order to protect them, he eliminated all of the villagers and brought the girls under his care. As curse users, the sisters proved to be valuable allies during Suguru’s Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. However, when Mimiko and Nanako asked Sukuna to kill Kenjaku, he became irritated and instead chose to destroy Mimiko’s head.
Hasaba echoed
Despite witnessing Mimiko’s death, Nanako still attempted to attack Sukuna. However, her head was swiftly cut in half. The sisters thought they could manipulate Sukuna by knowing the whereabouts of the final finger and asking for a favor in exchange. Sadly, despite their efforts, the deaths of these two characters in Jujutsu Kaisen were tragic as their ultimate goal was to free Geto’s body from Kenjaku.
20. Game
Yuji was made by Jogo to eat ten more of Sukuna’s fingers, bringing the total count to fifteen. Jogo had intended to recruit Sukuna to their side, but instead the curse turned on them and attacked. The battle was brief, but Sukuna seized the chance to wreak havoc on Shibuya. Once the fight ended, Sukuna finally praised Jogo, something he had longed for. Upon hearing Sukuna acknowledge his strength, Jogo wept and breathed his final breath.
21. Haruta Shigemo
Despite being allied with Kenjaku, Haruta was a curse user who wreaked havoc during the Sister School Exchange Event. Upon returning to Shibuya, he continued his rampage by targeting sorcerers and their assistants. Despite being brutally defeated by Nanami, Haruta miraculously survived and attempted to kill Megumi. However, Sukuna intervened, leading to the destruction of Shibuya and ultimately resulting in Haruto being cut in half.
Kento Nanami
Despite being a beloved character in Jujutsu Kaisen, Nanami’s death came as a major shock, particularly due to its brutal nature. After sustaining injuries in Dagon’s domain, Jogo sets Nanami’s body ablaze. Despite his fatal wounds, Nanami perseveres and manages to defeat several of the transmuted humans in Shibuya before facing Mahito. However, Mahito easily disintegrates Nanami’s upper body, causing him to die in front of Yuji and adding to the young sorcerer’s already intense feelings of trauma and despair.
23. Unconfirmed Identity of Nobara Kugisaki
During the Shibuya Incident Arc, Nobara encounters Mahito and suffers a life-threatening injury. Arata Nitta manages to stop the bleeding and attempts to save her, stating that her chances of survival are slim. However, the series has not revealed her status since then, leading fans to speculate that she may have perished. In chapter 210, Yuji and Megumi discuss their determination to not let Kurusu become a replacement for Nobara, strongly implying that she did not survive.
It will be done
Despite being the epitome of evil, he took pleasure in manipulating and tormenting others. He ruthlessly murdered several beloved characters and faced the consequences for his actions. Yuji, as his sworn nemesis, ultimately emerged victorious against Mahito. However, just as Yuji was about to vanquish the curse, Kenjaku intervened and utilized Geto’s abilities to absorb him.
Zenin, May 25
The Zenin Clan had plotted to eliminate Maki, Mai, and Megumi. When Maki finally arrived at the clan’s location, she discovered that Mai had already sustained serious injuries. With Maki no match for Ogi, she and Mai were both thrown into a pit. Though the sisters were on the brink of death, Mai selflessly used her remaining strength to fashion a weapon for Maki. In doing so, Mai’s death lifted the limitations on Maki’s body, as they were twins and shared a connection. As a result, Maki was able to exact revenge on her entire clan in honor of Mai.
26. Ogi Zenin
Despite Ogi always believing he had the talent to be the clan head, he was never given the opportunity due to the Zenins’ belief that his daughters were not strong enough. Ogi’s resentment towards his daughters led him to eagerly accept the chance to end their lives. However, Mai selflessly sacrifices herself to create a formidable sword for Maki, who then uses it to defeat Ogi by cutting his head in half.
27. Chojuro Zenin
Chojuro, a member of the Zenin Family and its prestigious squad of jujutsu sorcerers, the Hei, played a minor role in the story. Alongside several other members, he attempted to quell Maki’s explosion, but ultimately met his demise at her hands. Utilizing his natural ability, Earth Arms, he summoned two colossal stone arms to assail Maki, trapping her between their grasp. Despite his efforts, Maki effortlessly broke free from the hold.
28. Jinichi Zenin
Jinichi, a Grade 1 sorcerer, was a member of the Zenin Family and part of the Hei, their elite unit of jujutsu sorcerers. He had a powerful technique that could summon massive fists fueled by cursed energy, capable of acting like missiles. In an attempt to defeat Maki, he used Ranta as a diversion and gave his best effort, but ultimately did not succeed. Maki, showing no mercy, ruthlessly beheaded him and discarded his remains in the nearby lake.
29. Ranta Zenin
Despite being a minor character, Ranta held an important role as a member of the Zenin Family and its prestigious Hei unit of jujutsu sorcerers. When Maki launched an assault on the clan, Ranta heroically sacrificed himself to create an opening for Jinichi to defeat her. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain as they were no match for Maki’s power. Ranta passed away with a peaceful smile, content in knowing that he had fulfilled his duty.
Naoya Zenin
Despite Naoya’s belief that his skills made him the rightful heir of the Zenin Clan, he was ultimately the youngest son of clan head Naobito Zenin. Following Maki’s act of throwing Jinichi’s head into the water, Naoya engaged in a fight with her but was ultimately defeated. However, instead of succumbing to cursed energy, Naoya’s death came at the hands of Maki’s mother, who killed him with a simple knife. Despite coming back as a vengeful spirit, Naoya was ultimately defeated by Maki and Noritoshi Kamo.
31. Masamichi Yaga
Despite being one of the few characters introduced in the early chapters, Yaga’s death in Jujutsu Kaisen came as a shock. It was even more surprising due to the fact that he had a good relationship with Yoshinobu Gakuganji, who ultimately killed him. However, Gakuganji was just following orders from the higher-ups who took advantage of Gojo’s absence and falsely accused Yaga of conspiring with Geto.
32. Yuki Tsukumo
Despite being one of the strongest female characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuki was a special-grade sorcerer whose death was a significant loss to the Jujutsu community. In order to protect Master Tengen, she bravely stayed behind with Choso while the rest of the group proceeded with their plan to unseal Gojo. Despite Choso’s assistance, Yuki ultimately fell in battle against the powerful Kenjaku, sacrificing herself to allow Choso to escape.
33. Tsumiki Fushiguro
During the Culling Game Arc, it is revealed that Tsumiki, who was Megumi’s step-sister, had fallen into a coma due to an unknown curse affecting the entire nation. The curse’s true purpose was to revive ancient sorcerers, and Tsumiki’s body was used to bring back Yorozu. However, at that time, Sukuna had already taken control of Megumi’s body and used his powers to kill Tsumiki, causing her to spiral into a state of eternal despair.
Satoru Gojo
The internet was recently in an uproar following the death of Jujutsu Kaisen’s beloved character. Gojo has been a crucial figure in the story from the very start. Although he was sealed during the Shibuya Incident arc, he made a long-awaited return during the battle of the strongest. Despite his brave efforts against the King of Curses, he was unfortunately unable to defeat the embodiment of disaster.
35. Hajime Kashimo
After being revived during the Culling Game, Hajime, an ancient curse user, joined the sorcerers in hopes of fighting Sukuna after being defeated by Hakari. When the King of Curses defeated Gojo, Kashimo, another sorcerer, immediately entered the battlefield and showcased his powerful cursed technique. However, even with his godly abilities, Kashimo was easily defeated by the God of Lightning.
Iori Hazenoki
Iori, who was among the reincarnated sorcerers, joined forces with Reggie Star’s group, all of whom played the role of antagonists during the Culling Game Arc. In Chapter 239, the perspective shifted to Kenjaku, the villain behind the Culling Game players’ elimination for his own agenda. Unfortunately, Iori was one of Kenjaku’s casualties. Following Iori’s demise, Takaba makes an appearance.
37. Fumihiko Takaba
Despite being one of the strongest characters in the series, Takaba proved to be no match against the genius ancient curse user. The fight between Takaba and Kenjaku was comical, but ultimately ended in Takaba’s tragic death. It was later revealed that Takaba had served as a distraction for Yuta’s surprise attack on Geto’s body, but Kenjaku’s true intentions remained a mystery. Despite this victory, Kenjaku’s plan remained shrouded in uncertainty.
38. Hiromi Higuruma
Despite knowing the risks, Higuruma bravely joined the fight against the most formidable opponent. In Chapter 247, he met his end but not before passing on his determination to Yuji. This tragic event mirrors Nanami’s death, causing Yuji to experience a similar trauma. In addition, Higuruma may be the only other individual, besides Gojo, to earn Sukuna’s recognition for his extraordinary abilities. Sadly, Higuruma had already made the decision to sacrifice himself even before the battle commenced.
