Jujutsu Kaisen exhibit finally explains why Megumi’s backstory is better detailed than Yuji

Jujutsu Kaisen has captured the attention of audiences worldwide with its captivating portrayal of a fantasy realm filled with Cursed Energy, Cursed Spirits, and Jujutsu Sorcerers. The anime adaptation’s initial two seasons catapulted it to immense popularity, earning it the reputation of being one of the most exceptional contemporary series.

The main focus of the story revolves around Yuji Itadori, an ordinary teenager who is unexpectedly thrown into the world of Jujutsu. Alongside him is Megumi Fushiguro, who initially served as the secondary protagonist until he was overpowered by the Demon King Ryomen Sukuna.

Despite the focus on Yuji and his development in the story, a behind-the-scenes Jujutsu Kaisen exhibition suggests that Megumi’s origin story is more well-crafted than Yuji’s.

Initially, Megumi was intended to be the main character of the series, while his sister Tsumiki was also meant to play a significant role.

Despite originally planning for Megumi Fushiguro to be the focus of Jujutsu Kaisen, creator Gege Akutami had a change of heart and ultimately decided to make Yuji the main character. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that Megumi is the crucial component in this intricate storyline.

Initially, it was Megumi’s father, Toji Fushiguro, who encouraged Gojo Satoru to achieve enlightenment. It was his defeat at the hands of Toji that triggered Gojo’s awakening and earned him the title of “Honoured One”. Interestingly, Megumi belonged to the Zenin clan and was expected to be Gojo’s adversary, but circumstances ended up making Gojo his adoptive father.

Thirdly, Megumi possesses the undoubtedly strongest Cursed Technique in the series, known as the Ten Shadows Technique. It is one of the main factors that led to Sukuna’s decision to wait patiently for the opportunity to take over Megumi’s body. Furthermore, it appears that Megumi is the sole savior for himself, as the other sorcerers have been unable to succeed in their attempts.

Despite his intense training and traumatic experiences, Yuji Itadori does not fit the mold of a typical anime protagonist. While he has undergone significant growth, his driving force is solely focused on ridding the world of Sukuna, rather than aspiring to become a Pirate King or Hokage like other protagonists.

Moreover, he is one of the few characters whose Domain Expansion remains shrouded in mystery. While it is acknowledged that Domain Expansion is the ultimate manifestation of Jujutsu sorcery, Yuji’s background appears to be highly advantageous in terms of power. However, since the series is still ongoing, we may soon discover the truth.

Furthermore, Megumi’s backstory and overall narrative are closely intertwined with the main plot, more so than Yuji’s. The dark-haired teenager appears to hold a pivotal role in the unfolding events, potentially holding the key to defeating the formidable King of Curses.

Reflections

Despite his current position on the sidelines, Megumi Fushiguro still holds a significant role in the story.

Prior to being taken over by Sukuna, he played the role of the deuteragonist, sharing the spotlight with Yuji and other characters. It is worth mentioning that his story was gradually developed until it reached its climax when Sukuna took control.

The Demon King’s power increased greatly after Megumi used the Ten Shadows. His weaker mental resilience compared to others also made him a prime target. Even if Sukuna were to be removed from his body, he still possesses the means to initiate the Tengen-Humanity merger.

In summary, it appears that Megumi’s backstory is more extensively and effectively developed than Yuji’s. However, this does not mean that Yuji’s backstory is poorly executed.

  • Jujutsu Kaisen’s ending will depend on Megumi’s return, not Sukuna’s defeat
  • Jujutsu Kaisen finally explains why Sukuna is so interested in Megumi
  • Meaning behind Jujutsu Kaisen’s mandala artwork of Yuji, Gojo, Sukuna, and Kenjaku may have just been discovered
