KakaoTalk Undergoes Major UI Transformation: An Instagram-style Shift
From its inception in 2010, KakaoTalk has been the leading messaging application in South Korea. Now, it’s poised to undergo its most significant user interface overhaul in over a decade. Starting September 2025, the familiar “Friends” tab will transition from its current phonebook format to a dynamic Instagram-like feed.
Key Announcements from Kakao’s CEO
During the recent Q2 earnings conference, Kakao’s CEO, Shin Seong-shin, explained the strategic shift. The “Friends” tab, once a simple directory, will evolve into a hub for sharing daily experiences. As she noted, “The Friends tab will become a place to share everyday life, ” emphasizing the introduction of a feed showcasing friends’ shared content immediately below the main contacts.
Objectives Behind the Redesign
A spokesperson for Kakao elaborated that this major update aims to foster a more interactive platform, akin to social media, thereby enhancing user engagement and extending the time spent within the application. Changing User Patterns and Challenges
Recent industry data underscores the need for this change. Average monthly usage of KakaoTalk has experienced a decline, dropping from 822 minutes in May 2021 to 731 minutes in May 2024, according to Mobile Index. By adopting an Instagram-like feed, Kakao aims to rekindle user interest and encourage more frequent interactions.
The new layout is also expected to introduce innovative advertising strategies. As seen on Instagram, advertisements may seamlessly blend into user-generated content, providing Kakao with additional revenue streams while meeting increasing profitability demands. However, this update has raised apprehensions among users and industry professionals.

Mixed Reactions to KakaoTalk’s New Direction
Experts highlight that KakaoTalk’s success historically stemmed from its user-friendly design, reminiscent of conventional phonebooks. It provided intuitive messaging akin to texting. As one industry insider remarked, “Even those unfamiliar with Instagram are users of KakaoTalk. A sudden switch to an Instagram-like interface could potentially alienate some users, whose primary interest lies in messaging rather than content sharing.” This sentiment resonates with concerns raised following Kakao’s previous attempt to integrate a story feature called Pung, which was launched in 2023 but failed to gain significant traction.
Limitations of a Social Media Approach
Critics have pointed out structural limitations that may impede KakaoTalk’s efficacy as a social media platform. Unlike Instagram’s follower-based model, KakaoTalk automatically populates contact lists based on saved numbers, often including colleagues or professional contacts. This dynamic may dissuade users from freely sharing personal updates.
Furthermore, the platform lacks the ability for users to maintain multiple online personas or tailor content for diverse audiences—a feature widely available on competing social media platforms.
Looking Ahead: User Feedback and Adaptation
Despite the reservations, Kakao remains committed to monitoring user feedback vigorously post-launch, intending to make modifications as necessary. The company hopes that this bold transformation—transitioning from a messaging service to a content-focused platform—will not only enhance user engagement levels but also redefine KakaoTalk‘s competitive stance within the evolving digital landscape.
