Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 will undoubtedly feel the impact of John Dutton and Kevin Costner’s absence, but Kelly Reilly reassures fans that her character will remain unchanged.
During the 2023 Writers and Actors strikes in Hollywood, the acclaimed series Yellowstone faced significant transformations. Kevin Costner, who portrayed John Dutton since 2018, departed the show to focus on his four-part Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga.
Following Costner’s exit, the Taylor Sheridan-created series shocked viewers with the announcement that it would conclude after Season 5 Part 2, much sooner than expected. This has raised a crucial question: how will the final episodes unfold without John Dutton?
Kelly Reilly, who takes on the role of Beth Dutton, indicated that the storyline will remain compelling. She clarified that for Beth, her motivations will remain intact.
“It changes nothing as far as Beth’s desire to protect her family’s legacy. In fact, it becomes more urgent,” Reilly stated [via Entertainment Weekly].
This perspective aligns with Beth’s complicated relationship with the ranch. Despite her disdain for Dutton Ranch, John’s only daughter fights fiercely for her family’s legacy, motivated by his values. However, with John’s absence (presumably deceased), it falls to Beth to ensure the fulfillment of her father’s life mission.
Nonetheless, even if Beth’s character remains stable, it’s undeniable that Costner’s departure has altered the very foundation of what Yellowstone was intended to be. Executive producer David Glasser revealed that Taylor Sheridan always had a vision for the show’s conclusion.
“From day one, episode one, Taylor said, ‘I know exactly how this ends,’” Glasser noted.
Correspondingly, Reilly added: “He shared the show’s ending with me while we were filming Season 1.”
While fans must wait until November 10 to discover how Yellowstone may wrap up, they can take comfort in the assurance from cast member Luke Grimes, who believes the series will conclude beautifully.
“I read the last episode the day before we started filming,” he expressed. “I couldn’t be happier. I think it’s a perfect ending for every character. It’s a testament to Taylor’s exceptional writing, and it’s a profound, beautiful conclusion. I can’t wait to watch it.”
