Kevin Costner Opens Up About Uncertainty in Creating Horizon Chapter 3

With *Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2* premiering at the Venice Film Festival today, Kevin Costner is making headlines with an emotional appeal for the development of Chapter 3.

After announcing his decision to step back from *Yellowstone* to focus on this long-cherished passion project—a four-part Western epic spanning over 30 years—some eyebrows were raised. Costner has invested around $38 million of his own funds into the incomplete film series and has actively sought additional investors.

During a press conference at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, Costner became emotional as he discussed the future of *Horizon: An American Saga*, revealing that only two out of the planned four films have been completed.

“You realize that two is harder than one,” he stated, referencing the challenges of crafting a sequel. “It’s hard to go West. Three is the same thing; it gets harder. Chapter 3 is devastating because you get to know all these characters, and life keeps coming at them.”

He further elaborated, “They’re all written. I have to hurry and not let the rock fall back downhill; I must put my hands on it again and start to push it up. It’s a rope that I cannot let go of. I don’t know how I’m gonna make three right now, but I’m going to make it.”

Costner’s emotional sentiments underscore his commitment to the *Horizon* franchise. Released in June 2024, Chapter 1 received mixed reviews and was considered a box office disappointment, grossing only $36 million against a $50 million budget. Chapter 2 was initially set for release on August 16, just two months after Chapter 1, but was later pulled from the schedule with a new date pending confirmation.

Production on Chapter 3 commenced in May 2024.
