The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is still awaiting its release in theaters, but the director has already devised a plan for its home release, which includes a surprise twist.
Even though Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes won’t be released in theaters for another week, director Wes Ball has already revealed a surprise for the home release: a full-length version without any CGI.
During a conversation with Ape Nation, Ball revealed that the Blu-ray version of the movie will feature a special cut in which the actors are shown in mocap (motion capture) without any other visual effects.
According to Ball, I am currently working on a project for the DVD that will allow viewers to watch the full movie, including the raw dailies. This will give you the opportunity to compare the final cut with the raw dailies and see how seamlessly they are put together. It’s truly remarkable and you can simply sit back and appreciate it.
The director confidently expressed, “Erik [Winquist], our VFX [supervisor], and I will provide commentary throughout the film. It’s going to be a groundbreaking experience for us geeky individuals. This level of VFX has never been seen before. One of the biggest challenges in visual effects is seamlessly integrating CG characters with real actors. In this film, we have a human girl embracing a CG ape, which poses the question, ‘How do you make that look believable?’”
Ball’s choice to offer a glimpse into the making of the franchise’s VFX effects is highly intriguing, considering that all of the reboot films have received Best Visual Effects nominations at the Oscars. This opportunity will allow fans to witness the enchantment in action.
Additionally, this will allow audiences to witness the extensive efforts made by Ball and his team to transform a majority of the cast into apes, while still maintaining the overall high quality of the film.
Witness the stunning visual effects of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in all its glory on May 9 in the UK and May 10 in the US.
You can continue to stay informed about the fantastic films coming to the cinema this month.
