The highly anticipated sequel, Knives Out 3, has finally been given a title. However, the release of the film comes with one caveat that has received mixed reactions from fans.
Despite the long and winding road for fans of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out films, there is finally news about the highly-anticipated Knives Out 3. However, one aspect is already causing frustration among viewers, and it revolves around Netflix.
Specifically, their concern is that the movie will once again only be released on Netflix. Although the first installment was a huge success in theaters, the 2022 follow-up, Glass Onion, was only available on the streaming platform with a brief stint in theaters.
On May 24, 2024, it was revealed that the upcoming film would be titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The announcement also mentioned that the movie would be released in 2025. While it is unclear if the film will debut on Netflix, the absence of a theatrical release mention and the presence of the platform’s logo have left fans disappointed.

One X user commented, “It amazes me that the initial installment of this franchise earned $300 million with a budget of only $42 million. Yet, Netflix chose to keep it to themselves and never give any of the subsequent releases a wide release.”
Another person pointed out the irony of constantly lamenting the decline of movie theaters while choosing to release films that are best suited for the big screen on Netflix instead.
One person commented, “I was content until I read the final sentence. Did the complete decline of Glass Onion mean nothing to you?”Another individual chimed in, “The excessive greed of Netflix is causing significant harm to the film industry.”
“A comment was made expressing curiosity about the possibility of a widespread theatrical release for this movie. It was mentioned that Rian, who holds all franchise rights, was reportedly unhappy with Netflix’s handling of his previous film, Glass Onion, which was a major success for the streaming platform. If his dissatisfaction continues with the release of WUDM, it is possible that future movies could be released through a different outlet.”
Although the movie is guaranteed to be released on the streaming service, it is still uncertain if it will have a limited theatrical run. Knives Out was a box office success, grossing $315 million, while Glass Onion had a smaller theatrical release and only made $13 million in comparison before being available on the streaming service.
The highly anticipated film, Wake Up Dead Man, is set to be released in 2025. Don’t miss out on the latest A24 releases and other exciting new movies coming out next year. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for the most anticipated movies of 2024.
