Riot Games is intensifying efforts to combat the persistent issues that smurfs and cheaters create in the gameplay of Valorant. This popular multiplayer title has faced ongoing challenges with players who exploit lower-level accounts—known as smurfs—often by borrowing or purchasing them to dominate less experienced opponents.
In a bid to tackle this problem, Riot Games introduced multi-factor authentication (MFA) in May, aiming to bolster the integrity of matches. While some fans expressed skepticism and were eager to see the specifics of this initiative, recent updates reveal that MFA will initially be applied to certain flagged accounts as the beta phase unfolds.
New Anti-Cheating Measures in Patch 11.09
On September 18, Riot emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, “Playing against smurfs is one of the most frustrating experiences in VALORANT.” As part of their commitment to enhance the gaming experience, they announced that specific accounts would be mandated to activate MFA via the Riot Mobile app.
Furthermore, starting with Patch 11.09, the company will begin issuing bans on accounts it can reliably determine are either bought or engaged in boosting practices. While Riot acknowledges that this effort will not completely eliminate smurfing, they believe it will make a significant impact.

Only accounts flagged as shared, suspected of usage by multiple players, or ranked Ascendant or higher as of Patch 11.10 will need to activate MFA. Riot reassured legitimate players that their gaming experience would remain unchanged if they do not share their accounts with others. MFA is suggested as an excellent protective measure for all players, regardless of account sharing.
In addition, from Patch 11.08 onward, players will gain the ability to report incidents of ‘Rank Manipulation’ prior to the broader rollout of MFA across various regions. Riot is open to adapting these features based on community feedback as the situation evolves.
