Despite Koichi Haimawari’s brief appearance in a single panel, fans of My Hero Academia were overjoyed to see chapter 424 of the manga officially incorporate the spinoff series, Vigilantes, into the main storyline. This long-awaited canonization was a cause for celebration among loyal followers of Koichi’s character.
Some may argue that Koichi Haimawari was introduced to the main series later than expected, but there is also excitement surrounding the potential interactions he may have with the other characters. This is due to Koichi’s portrayal as a more distinctive and likable hero compared to Deku in the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes series.
How My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Made Koichi Stand Out More than Deku
Fans have long been eager to see a crossover between My Hero Academia: Vigilantes and the main series. Finally, Koichi Haimawari made his debut in the main series, fulfilling their wishes and becoming a part of the larger world.
Despite being the main character of its own spinoff series, Koichi remains one of the most beloved characters in the entire My Hero Academia franchise. Throughout his adventures in the spinoff, he frequently shared similarities with Izuku Midoriya, also known as Deku, the protagonist of the original series.
Despite their similar likable and mild-mannered personalities, there are many differences between the two characters. In fact, there have been multiple occasions where Koichi has outshined Deku as a Hero, adding even more excitement to his introduction in the main series.
Koichi Haimawari, the main character in the Vigilantes manga, is unique in the My Hero Academia series as he became a Hero without attending a Hero school or training program. Additionally, his Quirk, “Slide and Glide,”was re-classified as Flight, making him one of the few individuals to experience this change.
In addition to these two attributes, Koichi provides a refreshing and distinct approach to heroism in contrast to Deku, who embodies the typical shonen protagonist. While Deku is primarily involved in grand events, Koichi has won over readers with his portrayal as a hero on a smaller scale.
Moreover, Koichi’s Quirk, Slide and Glide, is relatively ordinary compared to Deku’s One For All in My Hero Academia. Throughout the series, Deku’s path was one of overcoming obstacles and ultimately fulfilling his destiny as the world’s greatest Hero, thanks to the Quirk bestowed upon him by All Might.
Despite this, Koichi’s fate took a significantly different turn, as he had to depend entirely on his ingenuity, adaptability, and determination in order to conquer challenges.
Reflecting on the My Hero Academia series, one can make the case that Deku’s heroism was based on established ideals, as he strived to emulate All Might and achieve the title of No.1 Hero. In contrast, Koichi operated outside of this structure. Unlike Deku, his motivation stemmed from a sincere desire to assist others rather than a lofty goal.
Despite his original moniker of “The Crawler,”this vigilante strived to assist the police and tackle mundane and often overlooked issues. Utilizing his Quirk, he dedicated himself to performing good deeds such as picking up litter, providing directions, returning lost belongings, promoting recycling, and occasionally serving as a cameraman.
What makes Koichi stand out from other heroes is his natural inclination to assist people with even the smallest of issues. He does not view these less glamorous tasks as beneath him or unappealing, as he takes pleasure in all the vigilant work he does with the goal of one day becoming a renowned Hero.
