Sony Pictures’ latest endeavor, Kraven the Hunter, seems to have missed the mark significantly, continuing a trend of mixed to poor receptions for their adaptations of Marvel properties. This film, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, may be facing one of the most challenging openings to date.

The premise follows Sergei Kravinoff, a character known for his morally ambiguous journey from hero to villain. He seeks vengeance against the formidable Rhino, a supervillain responsible for the abduction of his brother, Dmitri. The film’s unique twist features Russell Crowe adopting a Russian accent, a choice that has stirred some discussion among viewers.

Despite the intriguing premise, initial buzz around the film was minimal, leaving fans and critics underwhelmed even before its release. The marketing strategy appeared to lack the enthusiasm typically associated with blockbuster superhero films.

Box Office Performance: How Does Kraven the Hunter Stack Up?

Upon its debut, Kraven the Hunter generated $11 million in the US and an additional $15 million internationally, culminating in a global total of $26 million within its first weekend. This statistic becomes particularly telling considering the film’s budget soared to $110 million, largely influenced by adjustments related to the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

As of now, Kraven is screening in approximately 3,211 theaters nationwide. Despite the excitement surrounding superhero films, Kraven was outperformed by other films, including Moana 2 and Wicked, with Gladiator 2 and Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim following closely behind.

Franchise Entertainment Research’s David A. Gross remarked, “As the superhero genre has declined over the last five years, films like Morbius, Madame Web, and now Kraven have led the charge toward the bottom of the box office rankings.” He continued, emphasizing that despite attempts to adjust the budget for the current market, it remains excessively high given the film’s lackluster reception.

Set to Break Records—But Not in a Positive Way

Regrettably for the creators, Kraven has earned a distinction it would rather avoid: one of the worst openings for a comic book movie in history. Its debut figures have unfortunately placed it below other less successful projects such as Madame Web, Venom 3, and Morbius.

Here’s a quick comparison of opening weekend earnings:

  • Venom 3 : $51 million
  • Morbius: $39 million
  • Madame Web: $15.3 million
  • Kraven the Hunter : $11 million

The contrast becomes even more stark when comparing these results to the hugely successful Spider-Man franchises, which have enjoyed much better performance. Additionally, Kraven has received pressing reviews, scoring a mere 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. While Madame Web lingers behind at 11%, Morbius also matches with 15%. Surprisingly, Venom 3 leads, albeit with a still subpar rating of 41%.

As the dust settles from its disappointing launch, Kraven the Hunter remains available in theaters, but audiences are likely to carefully consider their viewing options.
