Kyoto Animation Announces 2025 City Anime Release with PV and Visuals

City anime, an eagerly awaited TV anime adaptation of Keiichi Arawi‘s acclaimed manga, is scheduled to debut in 2025. This announcement was made by Kyoto Animation during their online event showcasing new releases for 2025 on Saturday, September 21, 2024. The official staff presented a promotional video, visuals, and details about the main cast and director of the show.

The series will be titled City The Animation. This marks Kyoto Animation’s return to producing new TV anime after a six-year hiatus following the tragic arson attack that destroyed Building 1 of the studio, claiming 36 lives and injuring 32 individuals.

Keiichi Arawi’s manga initially appeared in Kodansha’s Morning Magazine and was serialized from September 2016 to February 2021, culminating in 13 tankobon volumes.

City anime’s promotional video confirms the 2025 release window

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 9 PM JST, Kyoto Animation concluded a countdown to announce their project lineup for 2025, confirming the production of City The Animation, based on Keiichi Arawi’s original manga series.

The studio shared a teaser promotional video, a key visual, and information about the anime’s main cast and director. As stated in the announcement, the City anime is set to premiere in 2025.

While a specific release date has not yet been provided, the teaser PV showcases a captivating blend of live-action images and animated sequences.

The promotional video was accompanied by a teaser visual featuring key characters Midori Nagumo, Wako Izumi, and Ayumu Niikura, all integral to the comic’s humor. In the visual, they are depicted in a children’s play box. Following the announcement of the anime adaptation, the staff launched a new website and X account to share the promotional video and visuals with fans.

Details regarding the main cast have also been revealed. Mikako Komatsu will voice Nagumo, a 20-year-old struggling university student. Aki Toyosaki will portray Niikura, Nagumo’s friend with aspirations of becoming a photographer. Yui Ishikawa plays Wako Izumi, who has a tendency to stalk Nagumo.

Taichi Ishidate, known for his work on Violet Evergarden and A Silent Voice, will direct the City anime at Kyoto Animation. The studio’s official YouTube channel has shared comments from both the director and the author, Keiichi Arawi.

In his comments, Keiichi Arawi expressed in Japanese (translated to English):

“I think it would be great if it became a City that everyone can enjoy. I’m so excited.”

Director Taichi Ishidate also encouraged fans, indicating that he and the team at Kyoto Animation are diligently working to create a captivating anime experience. He urged viewers to anticipate the broadcast of the series. More details about the anime will be unveiled in the future.

The City anime is a comedic series centered on the lives of three unique college students, Midori, Niikura, and Wako, as they navigate their ordinary “city life.”
