In a touching final appearance, the late actor Song Young-kyu graced the screen in the August 4 episode of ENA’s drama The Defects. His portrayal of Yoon Se-hoon, the morally ambiguous head pastor of a mega-church caught in a web of criminal activities, left an indelible impact.

The pivotal fifth episode marked both the character’s and the actor’s farewell, airing mere hours after news of Song’s passing broke. Yoon Se-hoon, the adoptive father of the main character Joo-an (played by Ahn Ji-ho), initially seemed complicit in the unsettling agenda of Kim Se-hee (portrayed by Yeom Jung-ah) to legalize child trafficking and genetic manipulation via the controversial “Defects Act.”However, it was later disclosed that his allegiance hinged on financial incentives.

The drama intensified when Joo-an confronted his adoptive father at the church, leading to a moment where he tasered Se-hoon. Although the children managed to escape, Se-hoon re-emerged, visibly battered, only to meet a tragic end at the hands of Jung-hyun (played by Dex), a genetically enhanced enforcer shaped by the same corrupt environment. This scene served as a somber conclusion, reflecting both the character’s fate and Song’s journey on-screen.

In a heartfelt tribute to Song Young-kyu, The Defects concluded its episode with a touching message of remembrance, leaving viewers to reflect on the loss of both the character and the beloved actor.

Song Young-kyu passed away on August 4, aged 56, amid ongoing scrutiny following a drunk driving incident. As a result, the production team of The Defects announced that his presence in the series would be reduced while still maintaining the storyline’s integrity. Despite this controversy, his portrayal resonated significantly with audiences, showcasing his remarkable talent.
